• Robert Wadlow is the tallest man in recorded history, measuring 2.72 m (8 ft 11.1 in) when last measured in 1940. He grew that tall because of a pituitary tumor that caused his body to produce excess growth hormone, a condition called gigantism.
• The shortest adult ever verified is Chandra Bahadur Dangi of Nepal, who stood just 54.6 cm (21.5 in) tall when Guinness measured him in 2012, barely taller than a standard ruler.
• Jeanne Calment of France holds the record for the longest confirmed human lifespan, living to 122 years and 164 days. Researchers have produced more documentation to verify her age than for any other person in history.
• Xie Qiuping of China grew the longest documented head of hair ever measured: 5.627 m (18 ft 5.5 in), after she stopped cutting it at age 13 in 1973. That's nearly as tall as a two-story house.
• Shridhar Chillal of India stopped cutting the nails on his left hand in 1952 and let them grow for 66 years. By the time he finally trimmed them in 2018, their combined length measured 909.6 cm (nearly 30 ft), with the thumbnail alone reaching 197.8 cm.
• In 1963, 17-year-old Randy Gardner stayed awake for 11 days and 25 minutes (264.4 hours) for a school science project, the longest scientifically documented period without sleep. Guinness World Records has since stopped tracking the category because of the health risks involved.
• An 18th-century Russian peasant named Valentina Vassilyeva is recorded as having given birth to 69 children across 27 pregnancies, including 16 sets of twins, 7 sets of triplets, and 4 sets of quadruplets. Sixty-seven of them reportedly survived infancy.
• In 2015, Rajveer Meena of India recited 70,000 decimal places of pi entirely from memory while blindfolded, a feat that took him nearly 10 hours to complete.
• Even identical twins, who share essentially the same DNA, are born with different fingerprints. Fingerprints form in the womb based on factors like umbilical cord position and blood pressure, not genetics alone, so the odds of two people ever sharing an identical print by chance are estimated at less than 1 in 64 billion.
• Every human on Earth shares about 99.9% of the same DNA sequence. The remaining 0.1% is what accounts for every visible difference between one person and another.
• Wang is the most common surname on the planet, shared by more than 100 million people, more than the entire population of countries like Germany or the Philippines.
• It took the entire span of human history until 1804 for the world's population to reach 1 billion people. Just over two centuries later, in 2022, it passed 8 billion.
• Population growth has sped up dramatically over time: the jump from 1 billion to 2 billion people took 123 years, but the jump from 7 billion to 8 billion took just 11.
• A 2021 study covering more than 100 countries found that 1 in every 42 people born worldwide is now a twin, up by a third since the 1980s, mostly because of fertility treatments and couples having children later in life. The identical-twin rate has stayed flat the whole time; only the fraternal-twin rate has climbed.
• About 10.6% of people worldwide are left-handed. That figure was only around 3% for people born in 1900, before it nearly quadrupled to about 12% for people born after 1960, not because left-handedness became more common genetically, but because fewer children were forced to switch to their right hand.
• Natural red hair is the rarest hair color on Earth, appearing in less than 2% of the world's population. It's caused by a mutation in the MC1R gene, and Ireland has the highest concentration of redheads of any country, at around 10%.
• The Population Reference Bureau estimates that more than 108 billion people have been born since Homo sapiens first appeared roughly 50,000 years ago. That means the 8 billion people alive today make up only about 7% of everyone who has ever lived.
• British anthropologist Robin Dunbar proposed that the human brain can only comfortably maintain about 150 stable social relationships at once, a limit now known as Dunbar's number. Within that circle, people typically devote about 40% of their social time to just their closest 5 friends.
• In a 1967 experiment, psychologist Stanley Milgram had 160 people in Nebraska try to pass a letter, person to person, to a stockbroker in Boston they had never met. Most of the letters that arrived did so in just 5 or 6 steps, the origin of the idea now known as "six degrees of separation."
