• Australia is home to 20 of the world's 25 most venomous snakes, along with the Sydney funnel-web spider, whose bite can kill a child in 15 minutes, and the box jellyfish, often called the most venomous animal on Earth. Despite that fearsome lineup, deaths are rare thanks to widely available antivenom.
• The Great Barrier Reef is the largest living structure on Earth, made entirely of billions of tiny coral polyps stretching over 2,300 km and covering roughly 350,000 sq km. It's large enough to be seen from space, the only living structure that can be.
• Aboriginal Australians have the oldest continuous living culture on the planet, with archaeological and genetic evidence showing continuous habitation of the continent for at least 65,000 years, predating Stonehenge, the pyramids, and the Acropolis by tens of thousands of years.
• The platypus is one of only five egg laying mammal species left on Earth, and males carry venomous spurs on their hind legs, making it the world's only venomous mammal that lives in water. They also glow under UV light, a trait scientists only discovered in 2020.

• For over a century, world maps recognized four oceans. That changed in June 2021, when National Geographic officially recognized the Southern Ocean, the ring of water circling Antarctica, as Earth's fifth ocean.
• The Caspian Sea is the largest lake in the world by surface area, at roughly 371,000 sq km, bigger than Germany. Despite its name, it's landlocked and classified as a lake, not a sea, even though its water is salty.
• Lake Baikal in Siberia is both the world's deepest lake, plunging 1,642 m (5,387 ft), and its largest freshwater lake by volume, holding roughly one-fifth of all the unfrozen fresh water on Earth's surface.
• Canada has the longest coastline of any country, stretching about 202,080 km, more than five times the circumference of the Earth.
• The Dead Sea, bordering Israel, Jordan, and the West Bank, sits at more than 430 m below sea level, the lowest point of dry land on Earth. Its shoreline keeps dropping by about a meter every year as the sea shrinks.
• La Paz, Bolivia is the world's highest capital city, sitting around 3,640 m (11,942 ft) above sea level, high enough that many visitors need a day or two to adjust to the thin air.
• China and Russia are tied for the most land neighbors of any country on Earth: 14 each. Russia's stretch from Norway all the way to North Korea, while China's run from Afghanistan to Vietnam.
• Kiribati is the only country whose main territory stretches across all four hemispheres, Northern, Southern, Eastern, and Western, a quirk of its islands straddling both the equator and the International Date Line.
• Greenland is the largest island in the world that isn't a continent, covering about 2.17 million sq km, roughly 80% of it buried under an ice sheet.
• Chile is the longest north-to-south country on Earth, stretching about 4,270 km, yet averaging just 177 km wide. You could drive Chile's full length and cover roughly the distance from London to Baghdad.
• South Sudan is the world's newest country. It split from Sudan and declared independence on 9 July 2011, becoming the 193rd member of the United Nations.
• Africa is the only continent that lies in all four hemispheres at once. The equator crosses through countries like Gabon, Kenya, and Somalia, while the Prime Meridian runs through Algeria, Mali, and Ghana.
• Oymyakon, a Russian village of around 450 people, is the coldest permanently inhabited place on Earth. Winter temperatures regularly drop below minus 50°C, and the village once recorded a low of minus 90°F (about minus 68°C) in 1933.
• Chile's Atacama Desert is the driest place on Earth outside the poles. Some of its weather stations have gone over 40 years without recording a single drop of measurable rain.
• The equator runs through 13 countries across three continents, including Ecuador, Brazil, Kenya, and Indonesia, the only one of them made up entirely of islands and archipelagos.
• The world is split into 7 continents, and Asia is the largest of all of them by a wide margin, both in land area and in population, home to more than half of all humans on Earth.
• Every map's 0-degree line of longitude, the Prime Meridian, runs straight through Greenwich, England. It was picked as the global standard at an international conference in 1884, mostly because so many ships already used British nautical charts.
• The International Date Line loosely follows the 180-degree meridian on the opposite side of the planet from Greenwich, but it zigzags sharply around island nations like Kiribati so that a single country's islands don't end up split across two different calendar days.
• The Pacific Ocean alone covers more surface area than every continent on Earth combined, at about 165 million sq km.
• The Sahara Desert is roughly the same size as the entire United States, around 9.2 million sq km of sand, rock, and mountains stretching across 11 African countries.
• No country owns Antarctica. It has no native permanent population or government of its own, and is instead managed collectively under the Antarctic Treaty, signed by dozens of nations since 1959.
• Antarctica holds about 90% of the world's ice and roughly 70% of its fresh water, all locked up in an ice sheet up to 4.7 km thick in places.
• As of a 2023 recount, Japan is officially made up of 14,125 islands, more than double the 6,852 the government had counted for decades. Only about 430 of them are permanently inhabited, and just the four main islands, Honshu, Hokkaido, Kyushu, and Shikoku, cover roughly 97% of the country's land area.
• The world's oldest documented company was founded in Japan in 578 AD. Kongo Gumi started when Korean carpenters were invited to build the Buddhist temple Shitenno-ji in Osaka, and the family construction firm they founded kept operating for more than 1,400 years before becoming a subsidiary of a larger company in 2006.
• A hot spring inn in Yamanashi Prefecture has been welcoming guests since 705 AD. Nishiyama Onsen Keiunkan holds the Guinness World Record for oldest hotel on Earth, certified in 2011 after more than 1,300 years in business.
• Japan's bullet trains have carried passengers since 1964 without a single passenger fatality from a train accident. The Tokaido Shinkansen has averaged well under a minute of delay per train for decades, sometimes as low as 24 seconds, and a delay of just 30 to 60 seconds can still be enough for the operator to issue a formal apology.
• The English name 'Japan' comes from a chain of mistranslation. Marco Polo never actually visited the country, but he wrote about it as 'Cipangu' based on what he heard secondhand in China, a garbled transcription of the Chinese pronunciation of characters meaning 'origin of the sun'. The Japanese have always called their own country Nippon or Nihon.
• Japan has around 4 million vending machines, roughly one for every 23 to 30 people, the highest density of any country on Earth. The US has almost as many machines in total, but they're spread across a country more than 25 times the land area with nearly three times the population.
• Every evening for almost a decade, an Akita dog named Hachiko sat at Shibuya Station waiting for an owner who was never coming back. Professor Hidesaburo Ueno died suddenly at work in 1925, but Hachiko kept returning to the station until his own death in 1935, and a bronze statue of him was installed outside the station in 1934, while he was still alive to see it.
• The Japanese macaques of Jigokudani in Nagano are the only troop of wild monkeys in the world known to bathe in hot springs. It started by accident in 1963, when an apple rolled into the water and a young monkey chased it in, discovered how warm it was, and the whole troop eventually picked up the habit.
• Greater Tokyo, the capital plus six surrounding prefectures, is home to about 41 million people, more than the entire population of Canada, making it the most populous metropolitan area on the planet.
• Japan has more people over the age of 100 than any other country, a record 99,763 as of September 2025, up for the 55th year in a row since the government started counting in 1963, when there were only 153. About 88% of them are women.
• Karaoke was invented in 1971 by Kobe drummer Daisuke Inoue, who built the first machine from a tape recorder, a coin box, and an amplifier so bar patrons could sing without a live backing band. He never patented it, believing he'd only combined parts that already existed, and by one estimate missed out on close to $100 million a year as the karaoke industry grew into a global business worth billions.
• The world's first capsule hotel opened in Osaka on February 1, 1979. Capsule Inn Osaka was designed by architect Kisho Kurokawa, commissioned by a sauna owner who wanted somewhere better than his sauna floor for customers who'd missed the last train home.
• Real Kobe beef has to come from purebred Tajima cattle born, raised, and slaughtered entirely within Hyogo Prefecture, with a marbling score of 6 or higher and a carcass weight capped at 470 kg. The rules are so strict that fewer than 0.2% of all beef produced in Japan each year actually qualifies.
• Japan's imperial line is the oldest continuous hereditary monarchy in the world, officially traced back to 660 BC and spanning 126 monarchs. Emperor Akihito's abdication in 2019 was the first time a Japanese emperor had stepped down from the Chrysanthemum Throne in about 200 years.
• The magnitude 9.0 earthquake that struck northeastern Japan in March 2011 was powerful enough to physically move the coastline. GPS data showed parts of the coast shifted east by up to 4 meters, and the quake dragged some areas of the country roughly 2.4 meters closer to North America.
• Mount Fuji hasn't erupted since December 1707, when it buried Edo, modern day Tokyo, in volcanic ash for over two weeks despite being about 100 km away. It's still classified as an active volcano today.
• Sushi didn't start out as raw fish on rice. It began as narezushi, a preservation method that packed salted fish in fermented rice for months at a time, and for centuries people threw the fermented rice away and ate only the fish. Combining the two together only became common around the 1500s, centuries before anything resembling modern sushi appeared.
• Japanese uses three writing systems at once. Hiragana and katakana each have 46 characters covering the same set of sounds, while kanji, adapted from Chinese, runs into the thousands, and a literate adult typically knows around 2,000 of them just to read a newspaper.
• The small island of Naoshima in the Seto Inland Sea has turned itself into an open air art museum, best known for Yayoi Kusama's giant yellow polka dot pumpkin sitting on a pier facing the ocean. A typhoon swept the original sculpture into the sea in 2021, so the team rebuilt it and unveiled a new one in 2022.
• Spirited Away became the first anime film, and the only hand drawn film, to win the Oscar for Best Animated Feature, taking the award at the 2003 ceremony just one year after the category was created.
• Japan's most sacred Shinto shrine has been completely torn down and rebuilt every 20 years for roughly 1,300 years, a ritual called Shikinen Sengu. Each rebuild takes about 8 years and uses techniques identical to the previous one, and timber from the old buildings gets recycled into shrines elsewhere in the country.
• Up to 3,000 people cross Tokyo's Shibuya Scramble at once every time the lights change, all directions at once, and an estimated 1 million pedestrians pass through it on a typical day, making it the busiest pedestrian crossing in the world.
• Pokemon is the highest grossing media franchise ever created, with an estimated lifetime revenue of about $288 billion since its 1996 launch as a Game Boy game, more than Hello Kitty, Star Wars, and Mickey Mouse each individually.
• Japan recorded just 671,236 births in 2025, a record low for the 10th year running, while deaths outnumbered births by more than 900,000. The population, currently around 124 million, is projected to shrink to about 87 million by 2070.
• Japan sits where four tectonic plates meet and is home to roughly 10% of all the world's active volcanoes. That same geology drives the roughly 1,500 earthquakes felt across the country every year.
• The Seikan Tunnel connecting the islands of Honshu and Hokkaido runs 53.85 km beneath the sea floor of the Tsugaru Strait, making it the longest undersea rail tunnel in the world.
• Sumo is Japan's oldest sport, with roots going back more than 1,500 years to matches described in the country's earliest historical chronicles, the Kojiki and Nihon Shoki. Unlike almost every other combat sport, it has no weight classes at all, so wrestlers can end up facing opponents more than 100 kg heavier than themselves.
• Tokyo has more Michelin starred restaurants than any other city on Earth, 160 of them, more than Paris in second place, and it has held that title for over 15 years running.
• Japan now has more pet cats and dogs than children. As of 2025 there were about 15.9 million registered cats and dogs compared to just 13.7 million children under 15, a gap that first opened back in 2003 and has kept widening ever since.
• Mexico City is built on the drained bed of Lake Texcoco, where the Aztec capital Tenochtitlan once stood. Decades of pumping groundwater from beneath the city have made it sink, in some neighborhoods by more than 370 mm a year, and the ground is expected to keep settling for another 150 years.
• Mexico is the largest Spanish-speaking country in the world, home to about 132 million native speakers, more than double the number in Spain.
• Chocolate was born in Mexico. The Olmecs were tapping cacao pods as early as 1500 BC, and by the 15th century the Aztecs valued cacao beans so highly they used them as currency.
• Mexico has 36 UNESCO World Heritage Sites, more than any other country in the Americas and the 7th most of any country on Earth.
• Día de los Muertos, Mexico's Day of the Dead, was added to UNESCO's list of Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2008. Families build altars and lay out a deceased relative's favorite foods, treating death as a continuation of life rather than something to mourn quietly.
• The largest pyramid in the world by volume isn't in Egypt. It's the Great Pyramid of Cholula in Mexico, at about 4.45 million cubic meters, nearly twice the size of the Great Pyramid of Giza. It's been hiding in plain sight for centuries, covered in soil with a church built on top.
• Mexico has the world's second-largest Catholic population after Brazil, with roughly 96 million Catholics, about 8.8% of all Catholics on Earth.
• The Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City is one of the most visited Catholic pilgrimage sites in the world, drawing more than 20 million visitors a year, many walking for days to reach it.
• Every fall, millions of monarch butterflies travel from Canada and the US to overwinter in the fir forests of central Mexico. It's a multi-generational relay: the butterflies making the trip have never been there before, yet somehow find the exact same groves their great-great-grandparents used.
• Mexico is the first country to host the FIFA World Cup three times, in 1970, 1986, and 2026. Its Estadio Azteca became the only stadium to host World Cup matches across three separate tournaments.
• Tequila can legally only be called tequila if it's made in specific regions of Mexico, mostly Jalisco. It became Mexico's very first legally protected geographic indication back in 1974.
• Mexico is one of the 17 megadiverse countries on Earth, ranking 4th overall in biodiversity and 1st in the world for reptile species, with 707 of them recorded.
• Mexico's Copper Canyon system is about four times larger by volume than the Grand Canyon. Its deepest section, Urique Canyon, drops 1,879 m, deeper than any point of the Grand Canyon.
• Mexico produces more silver than any other country on Earth, about 6,300 metric tons in 2024, nearly double what second-place China mined.
• Vanilla is native to Mexico. The Totonac people of Papantla were cultivating the orchid it comes from as early as 1115, long before it ever reached Europe.
• Tacos al pastor weren't invented by ancient Mexicans, they came from Lebanese immigrants who settled in Puebla in the 1930s and adapted their shawarma spit into what became one of Mexico's most iconic street foods, swapping lamb for pork and adding pineapple.
• The Xoloitzcuintli, Mexico's hairless dog, is one of the oldest dog breeds in the Americas, with remains dating back over 3,500 years. The Aztecs believed the breed guided the souls of the dead through the underworld.
• Corn was domesticated in Mexico around 9,000 years ago, bred by early farmers from a wild grass called teosinte in the Balsas River Valley, one of the most significant agricultural achievements in human history.
• Chichen Itza was named one of the New7Wonders of the World in 2007, chosen by more than 100 million votes cast worldwide alongside sites like the Great Wall of China and Machu Picchu.
• Baja California is the second-longest peninsula in the world, stretching about 1,247 km, second only to the Malay Peninsula.

• South Korea has the second fastest mobile internet in the world, with median speeds of 202.61 Mbps, behind only the UAE. The country built this lead deliberately in the 1990s, when the government liberalized telecoms and pushed hard for nationwide broadband.
• Until 2023, everyone in South Korea was already 1 year old at birth and got a year older on January 1, not on their birthday, so a baby born on December 31 turned 2 the very next day. South Korea officially switched to the international age system that year, though many people still use the old counting in casual conversation.
• K-pop generated an estimated $5.3 billion globally in 2022, and BTS alone was credited with contributing over $3.6 billion a year to South Korea's economy at the height of the group's fame, more than some of the country's traditional export industries.
• The Korean alphabet, Hangul, was invented from scratch in 1443 by King Sejong so ordinary people could read and write, instead of relying on Classical Chinese, which only the elite could learn. UNESCO calls it one of the most scientifically designed writing systems in the world, and its 24 basic letters can be learned in a matter of days.
• South Korea has the lowest birth rate on Earth. It fell to 0.72 births per woman in 2023 before edging up slightly to 0.75 in 2024, and in Seoul itself the rate is even lower, around 0.58, well under half of what's needed to keep the population stable.
• Squid Game's first season is the most watched show in Netflix history, racking up 1.65 billion hours viewed. Its third and final season later became the first show ever to rank number one across all 93 countries Netflix operates in during its debut week.
• Jinro soju has been the world's best selling liquor brand for 25 straight years, moving 94.5 million cases in 2024 alone, roughly three times the sales of the next biggest spirits brand on the planet.
• South Korea has the highest rate of cosmetic surgery per capita of any country, with some estimates putting it at close to 1 in 25 people annually, and surveys suggesting as many as a third of South Korean women in their 20s have had a procedure.
• Kimjang, the communal tradition of making and sharing kimchi before winter, was added to UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage list in 2013. Kimchi recipes date back to at least the 13th century, though the red chili peppers now considered essential weren't introduced to Korea until the 1600s.
• The Korean War never technically ended. Fighting stopped when an armistice was signed at Panmunjom on July 27, 1953, after 575 negotiating sessions, but no peace treaty ever followed, which means North and South Korea remain officially at war more than 70 years later.
• Taekwondo traces back roughly 2,000 years to Korea's Three Kingdoms era, but it wasn't formalized under its current name until 1955. It debuted as a demonstration sport at the 1988 Seoul Olympics and became a full medal event at Sydney 2000.
• The Seoul Metropolitan Subway is the longest subway system in the world by combined track length, stretching more than 1,300 km across 656 stations since its first line opened in 1974.
• South Korea has more than 20,000 PC bangs, computer gaming cafes charging as little as 75 cents an hour, and they helped turn the country into the birthplace of modern esports. When StarCraft arrived in 1998, Korea built the world's first game-dedicated TV channel around it and made national celebrities out of professional players.
• Korea was annexed by Japan in 1910 and remained under colonial rule for 35 years. When Japan surrendered in 1945, the peninsula was split along the 38th parallel almost overnight, a line chosen for administrative convenience that hardened into the permanent border between North and South Korea.
• Gyeongbokgung, the first royal palace of the Joseon dynasty, was built in Seoul in just one year, from 1394 to 1395. It was burned to the ground during the 1592 Imjin War and sat in ruins for nearly 275 years before finally being rebuilt.
• South Korea has the highest share of college graduates of any country tracked by the OECD, with 70.6% of 25 to 34 year olds holding a tertiary degree in 2024, well above the OECD average of 48.4%.
• Seoul's Incheon International Airport won the world's best airport award for 12 consecutive years running under one major ranking system, and it's still routinely ranked among the top two or three airports on Earth every year.
• The red and blue circle at the center of South Korea's flag is a yin yang symbol called the taegeuk, surrounded by four black trigrams representing heaven, earth, fire, and water. Each trigram is built from broken and unbroken bars that balance out perfectly across the whole flag.
• Samsung is the world's largest smartphone maker by shipments, holding about 22.6% of the global market, and Samsung Group as a whole accounts for roughly 20% of South Korea's entire GDP.
• The Port of Busan handles around 24.4 million shipping containers a year, making it one of the world's seven busiest container ports and the main transshipment hub for all of Northeast Asia.
• Hyundai and Kia together sold about 7.23 million vehicles in 2024, making the combined group the world's third largest automaker by sales, behind only Toyota and Volkswagen.
• South Koreans drink about 405 cups of coffee per person every year, more than double the global average, in a country nicknamed the 'Coffee Republic' that had over 100,000 cafes as of 2023.
• Korean bathhouse culture dates back to 1429, when monk run kiln saunas called hanjeungmak were first built as separate facilities for men and women. The modern jjimjilbang, open 24 hours with salt rooms and ice rooms, only appeared in 1992, when the first one opened in Seoul.
• The world's oldest surviving book printed with movable metal type isn't the Gutenberg Bible. It's Jikji, a Korean Buddhist text printed in 1377, a full 73 years before Gutenberg's press, and UNESCO confirmed the record in 2001.
• Jeju Island, Korea's youngest volcanic landmass, became the country's first natural UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2007. It's home to Mount Halla, Korea's highest peak, and more than 360 smaller volcanic cones scattered across a single island.
• Korean webtoon platforms Naver Webtoon and Kakao Entertainment together control more than two thirds of the global webtoon market, reaching a combined audience of over 170 million monthly readers across 150 countries.
• South Korea builds more of the world's ships than any other country, capturing around 22% of global orders in 2025. Its largest shipbuilder, HD Hyundai, is the single biggest shipbuilding company on the planet.
• Chuseok, Korea's biggest harvest festival, traces back more than 1,500 years to a weaving contest held during the Silla Kingdom. Today it triggers one of the country's biggest travel rushes every year, as families cram the highways to return to their hometowns and share rice cakes called songpyeon.
• Madrid's Sobrino de Botin has been serving customers since 1725 without ever closing, moving, or changing its name, and Guinness World Records recognizes it as the oldest restaurant on Earth. Ernest Hemingway was a regular, and its 300 year old wood oven is still fired up every day.
• The word siesta comes from the Latin hora sexta, the sixth hour after dawn, when Roman farm workers paused for a midday break to escape the heat. Spain's modern siesta schedule, with many shops closing for two to three hours in the afternoon, was actually formalized under dictator Francisco Franco.
• The world's biggest tomato fight started by accident in 1945, when a scuffle at a parade in the small town of Bunol ended with someone grabbing tomatoes from a nearby stall and throwing them. The tradition was banned in the 1950s, brought back after public protest, and now draws thousands of people who throw tons of tomatoes at each other every August.
• Spain has 50 UNESCO World Heritage Sites, the fifth most of any country, behind only Italy, China, Germany, and France.
• Barcelona's Sagrada Familia has been under construction since 1882 and still isn't finished. Its main structure reached full height in February 2026 when the final spire was completed, but the Glory Facade and other decorative elements aren't expected to be done until around 2034, more than 150 years after the first stone was laid.
• Spain produces more olive oil than any other country by a wide margin, accounting for around 45% of the world's supply. Roughly one out of every two bottles of olive oil sold anywhere in the world comes from Spain.
• Spain is the second most visited country on Earth, welcoming 96.8 million foreign tourists in 2025, behind only France. Tourism now makes up about 13% of the entire Spanish economy.
• At its peak in the 16th and 17th centuries, the Spanish Empire covered about 13.7 million square kilometers across five continents, making it the first empire in history large enough that the sun never set on it.
• Records for Pamplona's Running of the Bulls have been kept since 1910, and in that time 15 people have died, most from being gored. Hundreds more are injured every year during the eight day festival, which was made famous worldwide by Ernest Hemingway's 1926 novel The Sun Also Rises.
• Flamenco was added to UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage list in 2010. The art form blends centuries of influence from the many cultures that passed through southern Spain, but its modern form was shaped largely by the Roma community of Andalusia between the 18th and 19th centuries.
• Spanish is the world's second most spoken native language, with about 485 million native speakers, behind only Mandarin Chinese. Mexico alone is home to more native Spanish speakers, 125 million, than Spain itself.
• Spain's highest point isn't on the mainland. Mount Teide on the island of Tenerife rises 3,718 meters above sea level and is the third largest volcanic structure on Earth, ranked only behind Hawaii's Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea.
• A record 530,987 pilgrims completed the Camino de Santiago in 2025 and received their Compostela certificate, up 6% from the year before and the third consecutive record year. In the early 1970s, the centuries old pilgrimage route was walked by only a few dozen people a year.
• Granada's Alhambra palace complex was begun in 1238 by the first ruler of the Emirate of Granada and remained in Muslim hands until 1492, when it was the last stronghold to fall during the Christian reconquest of Spain. Today it's Spain's most visited monument, drawing close to 3 million people a year.
• Spain sits on almost the exact same longitude as the UK, which means it should share the same time zone, but it's been an hour ahead on Central European Time since 1941, when dictator Francisco Franco moved the clocks forward as a gesture of solidarity with Nazi Germany. The country never switched back.
• Don Quixote, published in two parts in 1605 and 1615, is the second most translated book in the world after the Bible, translated into other languages within just eight years of its first publication. It's often called the first modern novel in Western literature.
• Paella began as a practical lunch cooked by farm laborers in the rice fields around Valencia in the 15th century, made with whatever was on hand, rice, snails, beans, and rabbit or duck if they were lucky. It didn't become the celebratory dish it is today until the late 19th century.
• Spain's national anthem, the Marcha Real, has no official lyrics, one of only a handful of national anthems in the world without words. Several attempts to add official lyrics have failed, partly because Spain's diverse regions and political history make agreeing on the right words nearly impossible.
