Ancient Egyptian civilization lasted for more than 3,000 years, from around 3100 BC when Upper and Lower Egypt were first unified under one king, to 30 BC when Rome annexed Egypt after the death of Cleopatra.
The Great Pyramid of Giza, built for the pharaoh Khufu around 2560 BC, remained the tallest human-made structure on Earth for almost 3,800 years, until England's Lincoln Cathedral surpassed it around AD 1311.
The Great Pyramid was originally about 146.6 meters tall, but erosion and the loss of its smooth outer casing stones over the centuries have reduced it to roughly 138.5 meters today.
The Great Pyramid is made of an estimated 2.3 million stone blocks, each averaging around 2.5 tons, with some blocks weighing as much as 80 tons.
Ancient Egyptians began mummification around 2600 BC, and the full process, including drying the body with a salt called natron, could take up to 70 days from death to burial.
Egyptian embalmers removed most internal organs during mummification but left the heart in place, because they believed it, not the brain, was the center of thought and would be weighed against a feather in the afterlife.
The brain was considered so unimportant that embalmers typically pulled it out through the nose using a hooked tool and simply discarded it.
Ancient Egyptian hieroglyphic writing used more than 700 individual signs at its peak and remained a mystery to modern scholars for over 1,400 years after the last known inscription was carved in AD 394.
The Rosetta Stone, discovered by French soldiers in 1799, finally cracked the code of hieroglyphs because it carried the same decree written in three scripts, hieroglyphic, Demotic, and ancient Greek, letting scholars use the Greek text as a key.
It still took scholar Jean-Francois Champollion until 1822, 23 years after the Rosetta Stone's discovery, to fully decipher the hieroglyphic writing system.
Ancient Egyptians worshipped over 1,500 different gods and goddesses across their history, with major deities like Ra, Osiris, Isis, and Anubis holding a wide range of specialized roles.
Anubis, the jackal-headed god of mummification and the afterlife, was believed to guide the dead through the underworld and personally weigh their hearts against the feather of the goddess Maat.
The sun god Ra was believed to travel across the sky by day in a solar boat, then sail through the underworld each night to battle the serpent of chaos, Apophis, before rising again at dawn.
Cats were considered sacred in ancient Egypt, associated with the goddess Bastet, and killing one, even accidentally, could carry the death penalty. Families reportedly shaved their eyebrows in mourning when a pet cat died.
Archaeologists have found more than a million mummified cats in ancient Egyptian cemeteries, many of them bred and killed specifically as religious offerings rather than as beloved pets.
The Nile River flooded predictably every year, depositing nutrient-rich silt onto farmland, a cycle so central to Egyptian survival that the ancient Greek historian Herodotus called Egypt "the gift of the Nile."
Ancient Egyptians developed one of the world's earliest calendars, based on the Nile's flood cycle and the star Sirius, dividing the year into 12 months of 30 days each, plus 5 extra days, for 365 days total.
Cleopatra VII, the last active ruler of ancient Egypt, lived closer in time to the Moon landing in 1969 than to the construction of the Great Pyramid of Giza. Roughly 2,500 years separate her from the pyramid, but fewer than 2,000 years separate her from Apollo 11.
Cleopatra was actually of Greek Macedonian descent, part of the Ptolemaic dynasty founded by one of Alexander the Great's generals, not ethnically Egyptian, though she was reportedly the only Ptolemaic ruler who bothered to learn the Egyptian language.
The boy pharaoh Tutankhamun became king at around age 9 and died at about 18 or 19, yet he's one of the most famous pharaohs today largely because his tomb was discovered nearly intact by archaeologist Howard Carter in 1922, unlike most royal tombs that had been looted centuries earlier.
Tutankhamun's tomb contained more than 5,000 individual objects, including his iconic solid gold burial mask, which weighs around 10 kg and remains one of the most recognizable artifacts in the world.
Ancient Egyptian pharaohs were believed to become gods after death, specifically merging with Osiris, god of the afterlife, one reason so much wealth and effort went into their tombs and funerary rituals.
Egyptian pyramid construction required tens of thousands of workers, and evidence from workers' villages near Giza shows they were paid in food, including beer, rather than being slaves, contradicting a popular myth.
Ancient Egyptian laborers building the pyramids reportedly received a daily beer ration, since beer was a dietary staple that provided calories and was considered safer to drink than the Nile's water in many contexts.
Egyptian society had one of the more progressive-for-its-time sets of rights for women in the ancient world. Women could own property, run businesses, initiate divorce, and represent themselves in legal disputes.
At least a handful of women ruled ancient Egypt as pharaoh in their own right, including Hatshepsut, who reigned for about 21 years starting around 1479 BC and commissioned one of the most successful trading expeditions in Egyptian history, to the land of Punt.
Hatshepsut is sometimes depicted in statues wearing a false ceremonial beard, a symbol of pharaonic authority, since the role was so closely tied to male kingship that some of her portraits used it to reinforce her legitimacy.
Ancient Egyptian doctors practiced a surprisingly advanced form of medicine for their time. The Edwin Smith Papyrus, dated to around 1600 BC, describes 48 surgical case studies, including some of the earliest known descriptions of the brain and spinal cord.
Egyptian medical texts prescribed treatments that included both effective remedies, like honey, which has real antibacterial properties, and treatments modern medicine would consider ineffective or even dangerous, like applying moldy bread to wounds or crocodile dung as a contraceptive.
Ancient Egyptians used one of the earliest forms of paper, called papyrus, made by weaving and pressing thin strips cut from the papyrus plant, a technology so central to writing that the word "paper" itself derives from it.
Ancient Egyptian scribes were a respected, literate elite in a society where an estimated less than 5 percent of the population could read and write, and years of formal training were required to master the hundreds of hieroglyphic signs.
Egyptian pharaohs wore an elaborate double crown combining the White Crown of Upper Egypt and the Red Crown of Lower Egypt, a symbol of the unification of the two regions into a single kingdom around 3100 BC.
Ancient Egyptians used black eyeliner made from a mineral called kohl not just for appearance, but because it was believed to help protect the eyes from the sun's glare and from infections, and both men and women wore it.
One of the earliest known toothpaste recipes comes from ancient Egypt, described in a papyrus dated to as far back as the 4th century AD, made from a gritty mixture that included crushed rock salt, mint, dried iris flowers, and pepper.
Ancient Egyptian bread was often gritty with sand and stone particles from the milling process, and studies of mummies show many ancient Egyptians suffered from severely worn-down teeth as a result.
The pyramids at Giza were built with remarkable precision. The base of the Great Pyramid is level to within about 2.1 cm across its entire 230-meter length, and its four sides are aligned to true north with an average error of just a tiny fraction of a degree.
Ancient Egyptians practiced an early, informal form of dentistry and had specialists who treated tooth problems, evidenced by mummies found with dental interventions, including one specimen believed to have had a linen-and-honey filling.
Ancient Egyptian children played with toys still familiar today, including spinning tops, dolls with movable limbs, and board games, the most popular of which, senet, involved moving pieces across a grid of 30 squares and dates back over 5,000 years.
Senet, one of the oldest known board games in the world, was believed by later ancient Egyptians to represent a symbolic journey through the afterlife, not just entertainment, and boards were sometimes buried with the dead.
Ancient Egyptian houses for common people were built from mudbrick, cheap and effective in Egypt's dry climate, while temples and tombs meant to last for eternity were built from durable stone instead.
Egyptian pharaoh Ramesses II, sometimes called Ramesses the Great, ruled for about 66 years, one of the longest reigns in ancient Egyptian history, and reportedly fathered over 100 children.
Ramesses II commissioned the massive rock-cut temples at Abu Simbel, and in the 1960s the entire complex, weighing thousands of tons, had to be cut apart and relocated to higher ground to save it from flooding caused by the construction of the Aswan High Dam.
Ancient Egyptian obelisks, tall four-sided stone pillars often dedicated to the sun god, were typically carved from a single block of granite, and moving one from the quarry to its final site could require thousands of laborers and specially built barges.
Several ancient Egyptian obelisks were later taken by other empires as trophies and now stand far from Egypt, including one in New York's Central Park and another in London, both nicknamed "Cleopatra's Needle" despite having no direct connection to Cleopatra herself.
Ancient Egyptians believed that saying a dead person's name kept their spirit alive, one reason so much effort went into inscribing names throughout tombs, and why some rulers tried to erase their enemies' names from monuments as a form of damnation.
The pharaoh Akhenaten attempted a radical religious revolution around 1350 BC, briefly abandoning Egypt's traditional pantheon of gods to worship a single deity, the sun disk Aten, making his reign one of the earliest known experiments with monotheism in recorded history.
After Akhenaten's death, Egyptian priests and his successors, including his son Tutankhamun, largely reversed his religious reforms and worked to erase his name and memory from official records.
Ancient Egyptians used a decimal number system, but without a symbol for zero as a placeholder, and represented large numbers using specific hieroglyphic symbols, for example a coiled rope for 100 and a lotus flower for 1,000.
Modern historians divide ancient Egyptian history into three main kingdoms, the Old Kingdom, the Middle Kingdom, and the New Kingdom, each separated by unstable "intermediate periods" of political fragmentation.
Ancient Egyptian workers building royal monuments organized what may be history's earliest recorded labor strike, around 1157 BC under Ramesses III, when tomb builders at Deir el-Medina stopped work after their wages of grain were delayed.
Ancient Egyptian sailors and traders built ships from bundled papyrus reeds and cedar wood imported from Lebanon, since Egypt itself had very little suitable timber for large ship construction.
Ancient Egypt maintained extensive trade networks reaching as far as Punt, likely in the Horn of Africa region, from where expeditions brought back gold, ebony, ivory, exotic animals, and incense-producing myrrh and frankincense trees.
Ancient Egyptian beer was thick, nutritious, and safer to drink than untreated river water, and it was consumed daily by people of virtually every social class, including children, making it more like a staple food than a purely recreational drink.
Egyptian mathematics included a working understanding of basic geometry good enough to calculate the volume of a truncated pyramid, a fairly advanced calculation demonstrated in a surviving document called the Moscow Mathematical Papyrus, dated to around 1850 BC.
Ancient Egyptian society, unlike many ancient civilizations, did not treat marriage as a matter requiring formal religious or state ceremony. A couple was generally considered married once they simply began living together.
Egyptian medical practitioners treated headaches, wounds, and diseases with a mix of empirical remedies and magical spells recited alongside treatment, since illness was often thought to have both a physical and a supernatural cause.
The ancient Egyptian language survived in a descendant form, Coptic, which is still used today as a liturgical language in the Coptic Orthodox Church, meaning a version of the pharaohs' language is technically still spoken in religious settings more than 4,000 years after it first appeared.
Ancient Egyptian artists followed a strict, standardized set of proportions and poses when depicting the human body, a convention scholars call the "canon of proportions," which barely changed for roughly 3,000 years of Egyptian art.
Egyptian tomb paintings typically show the human body with the head, legs, and feet in profile but the torso and eye facing forward, a stylized composite view meant to represent the body's most recognizable angle from every part, not an attempt at realism.
Ancient Egyptian pharaohs were sometimes buried with elaborate false doors carved into tomb walls, believed to allow the deceased's spirit, or "ka," to pass freely between the world of the living and the afterlife.
Ancient Egyptian workers who built the pyramids lived in a purpose-built town near Giza with bakeries, breweries, and medical facilities, and skeletal analysis shows some workers received medical care for broken bones, including one that had healed after being set.
Egyptian priests were required to shave their entire bodies, including their heads and eyebrows, and bathe multiple times a day, since cleanliness was considered essential to performing temple rituals in a state of ritual purity.
Ancient Egyptians commonly wore wigs made from human hair, wool, or plant fiber over their shaved or short-cropped heads, both for fashion and for practical hygiene reasons in Egypt's hot climate.
The Great Sphinx of Giza, carved from a single mass of limestone bedrock, is roughly 73 meters long and 20 meters tall, making it one of the largest monolithic statues in the world. Its nose was likely lost centuries after it was carved rather than removed by any single infamous act of vandalism, despite persistent legends blaming Napoleon's soldiers.
Ancient Egyptian queen Nefertiti, wife of the pharaoh Akhenaten, is known today largely through a strikingly lifelike painted limestone bust discovered in 1912, now displayed in Berlin, which has become one of the most reproduced images of ancient Egyptian art.
The exact location of Nefertiti's tomb remains unknown, and her mummy has never been conclusively identified, despite over a century of searching and several disputed claims.
Ancient Egyptian farmers used a simple wooden plow pulled by oxen and relied almost entirely on the Nile's predictable annual flood, rather than rainfall, to irrigate their crops, since Egypt receives very little natural rainfall.
Egyptian farmers grew emmer wheat and barley as staple grains, along with flax for making linen cloth, and vegetables like onions, garlic, and leeks, foods still strongly associated with the region thousands of years later.
Ancient Egyptians developed an extensive system of canals and basins to control and store Nile floodwater, one of the earliest known examples of organized water management infrastructure in human history.
Ancient Egyptian society used a form of paid labor even for state monument projects. Records from Deir el-Medina show detailed administrative logs tracking workers' attendance, wages, and even excuses for missed workdays, remarkably similar to a modern payroll system.
Ancient Egyptians believed the goddess Nut, depicted as a star-covered sky arching over the earth god Geb, swallowed the sun every evening and gave birth to it again every morning.
Egyptian pharaohs were sometimes mummified alongside their beloved pets, and archaeologists have found mummified cats, dogs, and even a gazelle buried with their royal owners.
Ancient Egyptian mummification techniques grew more elaborate over centuries, and by the New Kingdom period embalmers had developed methods good enough that some mummies, well over 3,000 years old, still have recognizable facial features and hair today.
Ancient Egyptians used a reed-based writing implement and ink made from soot or minerals to write both hieroglyphs, used mainly for monuments, and a faster, simplified cursive script called hieratic, used for everyday documents and record-keeping.
Ancient Egyptian scribes recorded government business, religious texts, medical knowledge, and literature on papyrus scrolls, and one of the longest surviving examples, the Harris Papyrus, stretches over 40 meters when fully unrolled.
Ancient Egyptian pharaoh Khufu, builder of the Great Pyramid, is so historically significant that his monument still stands nearly 4,600 years later, yet only a single confirmed statuette of him, a tiny 7.6 cm ivory figure, has ever been discovered.
Ancient Egyptian society valued the concept of "maat," representing truth, balance, and cosmic order, and pharaohs were expected to uphold maat throughout the kingdom as one of their core religious duties.
The Egyptian pharaoh was believed to personally guarantee the Nile's flood and the fertility of the land through religious rituals, meaning a poor flood year could sometimes be blamed on a pharaoh's failure to maintain divine order.
Ancient Egyptians developed one of the first known forms of a police force, employing officers known as the Medjay, originally a Nubian people, to guard royal tombs, monuments, and borders against grave robbers and intruders.
Tomb robbery was such a persistent problem in ancient Egypt that surviving court records from around 1100 BC document actual trials of accused tomb robbers, including confessions describing exactly how they broke into royal tombs.
Ancient Egyptian pharaoh Narmer, sometimes credited with first unifying Upper and Lower Egypt around 3100 BC, is commemorated on the Narmer Palette, a ceremonial stone slab considered one of the earliest known historical documents in the world.
Ancient Egyptian craftsmen produced glass and colorful glazed ceramics called faience thousands of years before glassmaking became widespread elsewhere, with faience jewelry, amulets, and small figurines found across Egyptian archaeological sites.
Ancient Egyptians associated blue and green faience objects with rebirth and fertility, largely because those colors evoked the life-giving waters of the Nile and the fresh growth that followed its annual flood.
Ancient Egyptian temples like Karnak, expanded and rebuilt by successive pharaohs for over 2,000 years, cover an area of roughly 100 hectares, large enough to contain about 10 average European cathedrals.
The Great Hypostyle Hall at Karnak Temple contains 134 massive stone columns, some over 21 meters tall and wide enough that dozens of people could stand together on top of a single column's capital.
Ancient Egyptian art recorded a striking case in its mythology and tomb decoration. The tomb of two royal manicurists, Khnumhotep and Niankhkhnum, dated to around 2400 BC, depicts the two men in poses typically reserved for married couples, though historians still debate the exact nature of their relationship.
Ancient Egyptians believed that certain amulets, small charms often shaped like scarab beetles, offered magical protection, and scarab amulets were placed directly over a mummy's heart to help it pass safely through judgment in the afterlife.
The scarab beetle was sacred to ancient Egyptians because it was seen rolling balls of dung across the ground, a behavior the Egyptians linked symbolically to the sun god Ra rolling the sun across the sky each day.
Cleopatra VII reportedly died by suicide in 30 BC, according to popular tradition by allowing a venomous snake, likely an asp, to bite her, though the exact circumstances of her death remain debated by historians due to a lack of definitive physical evidence.
After Cleopatra's death, Egypt was annexed directly by the Roman Empire under Octavian, later known as Augustus, ending nearly 3,000 years of pharaonic rule and roughly 300 years of Greek Ptolemaic control.
Ancient Egyptian pyramids were originally built with a smooth, polished outer layer of white limestone casing stones, which would have made them gleam brightly in the sunlight, but most of this casing was stripped away over the centuries to build other structures in Cairo.
Ancient Egyptians built more than 100 pyramids in total across Egypt, not just the three famous ones at Giza, ranging from massive royal monuments to smaller, less well-preserved structures for lesser officials.
The Step Pyramid of Djoser, built around 2670 BC for Egypt's Third Dynasty, is considered the oldest large-scale cut-stone monument in the world and predates the Great Pyramid of Giza by roughly a century.
The architect Imhotep, credited with designing the Step Pyramid of Djoser, was later deified by the ancient Egyptians themselves, worshipped as a god of medicine and wisdom more than 2,000 years after his death.
Ancient Egyptian society used a specific unit of measurement called the royal cubit, based on the length of a pharaoh's forearm plus the width of his hand, standardized at about 52.4 cm, to keep pyramid and temple construction consistent.
Ancient Egyptians were skilled brewers and winemakers, and archaeologists have found wine jars in royal tombs labeled with the vineyard, vintage year, and even quality grade, an early form of labeling that resembles a modern wine label.
Ancient Egyptian society had an organized legal system with local courts, and surviving legal documents show that ordinary Egyptians, not just the wealthy, could file lawsuits over property disputes, theft, and unpaid debts.
Ancient Egyptians used makeup, jewelry, and perfumed oils as everyday grooming habits across most social classes, not just for the wealthy elite, since Egypt's hot, dry climate made skin and eye care a practical necessity as well as a fashion choice.
Ancient Egypt is believed to be home to some of the earliest domesticated cats in the world, and genetic studies suggest the modern domestic cat's ancestors likely spread out from ancient Egypt and the wider Near East alongside human trade routes.
Ancient Egyptian pharaoh Khafre, builder of the second-largest pyramid at Giza, is also widely believed to be the pharaoh depicted by the face of the Great Sphinx, though this identification is not universally agreed upon by Egyptologists.
Ancient Egyptian farmers paid taxes to the state primarily in the form of grain rather than money, since a standardized coin currency wasn't widely used in Egypt until Greek Ptolemaic rule began after 305 BC.
Ancient Egyptian society had professional mourners, often women, hired to attend funerals and publicly wail, tear at their clothes, and throw dust on their heads to display grief and honor the deceased.
Ancient Egyptian pharaoh Akhenaten and his wife Nefertiti built an entirely new capital city, Akhetaten, modern Amarna, from scratch around 1346 BC to serve as the center of his new religion, but the city was abandoned within just a couple of decades after his death.
Ancient Egyptian society is one of the earliest known civilizations to develop a fully functioning system of standardized weights and measures for trade, using stone or metal weights calibrated against official standards kept in temples.
Ancient Egyptian pharaoh Seti I built one of the largest and best-preserved royal tombs in the Valley of the Kings, extending more than 130 meters into the rock, decorated almost entirely with elaborate painted religious texts and imagery.
The Valley of the Kings, used as the primary royal burial ground during Egypt's New Kingdom period, contains at least 63 known tombs and chambers, and new discoveries there, including Tutankhamun's tomb in 1922, have occurred well into the modern era.
Ancient Egyptian craftsmen used copper and, later, bronze tools to cut and shape stone for their monuments, since iron tools didn't become common in Egypt until relatively late in its history, well after the great pyramids had already been built.
Ancient Egyptian trade expeditions to Punt under Queen Hatshepsut around 1470 BC are recorded in detailed relief carvings at her mortuary temple, depicting exotic imported goods, foreign rulers, and even the physical appearance of the Puntite people themselves.
Ancient Egyptians celebrated numerous religious festivals throughout the year, including the Opet Festival at Thebes, when statues of the gods were paraded between temples, drawing large public celebrations that could last for weeks at a time.
Ancient Egyptian civilization influenced later cultures so thoroughly that structures like obelisks, and design motifs like the lotus flower and scarab beetle, still appear in architecture, jewelry, and popular culture more than 3,000 years after they were first created.
