All World War 1 Facts

World War 1 began on July 28, 1914, after the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary a month earlier in Sarajevo, on June 28, 1914.
Archduke Franz Ferdinand was killed by Gavrilo Princip, a 19-year-old Bosnian Serb nationalist, who fired the fatal shots after an earlier assassination attempt that same morning had already failed.
Franz Ferdinand's assassination succeeded partly by accident: his driver took a wrong turn onto the street where Princip happened to be standing, after an earlier bomb attack had already forced a change of route.
The war eventually drew in more than 30 countries, split mainly between the Allied Powers (including France, Britain, Russia, Italy, and later the United States) and the Central Powers (Germany, Austria-Hungary, the Ottoman Empire, and Bulgaria).
A tangled web of alliances meant that within about five weeks of Franz Ferdinand's assassination, most of Europe's major powers had declared war on each other.
Germany's Schlieffen Plan aimed to defeat France quickly by invading through neutral Belgium before turning to fight Russia, but the plan stalled and helped drag Britain into the war to defend Belgian neutrality.
The Western Front stretched roughly 700 km (about 440 miles) from the North Sea coast to the Swiss border, much of it locked in trench warfare for most of the war.
Soldiers on the Western Front dug an estimated 40,000 km (25,000 miles) of trenches combined, enough to circle the Earth almost once.
The First Battle of the Marne in September 1914 halted Germany's advance on Paris, ending hopes of a quick victory and setting the stage for years of trench stalemate.
The Battle of the Somme, fought in 1916, saw the British Army suffer roughly 57,000 casualties on its first day alone, the bloodiest single day in British military history.
The Battle of the Somme lasted about five months and resulted in over 1 million casualties on both sides combined, for a front line that moved only a few miles.
The Battle of Verdun in 1916 lasted around 300 days, making it one of the longest and costliest battles in history, with roughly 700,000 casualties combined.
French commanders at Verdun adopted the rallying cry "Ils ne passeront pas" ("They shall not pass"), which became one of the war's most famous slogans.
Tanks were first used in combat at the Battle of the Somme in September 1916, though early models were slow, unreliable, and prone to breaking down.
The first large-scale use of poison gas on the Western Front came at the Second Battle of Ypres in April 1915, when German forces released chlorine gas against French and Algerian troops.
Soldiers initially had no proper protection against gas attacks and were sometimes told to urinate on cloths and hold them over their faces as an improvised defense before real gas masks were issued.
The Christmas Truce of 1914 saw soldiers from opposing sides along parts of the Western Front informally stop fighting, and in some places even play impromptu games of football in no man's land.
The Christmas Truce wasn't ordered by any military command. It happened spontaneously in scattered locations and was never officially repeated at that scale in later years of the war.
The sinking of the passenger liner RMS Lusitania by a German U-boat in May 1915 killed 1,198 people, including 128 Americans, and helped shift U.S. public opinion against Germany.
The United States didn't enter the war until April 1917, nearly three years after fighting began, following renewed unrestricted German submarine warfare and the intercepted Zimmermann Telegram.
The Zimmermann Telegram was a secret German proposal urging Mexico to join the war against the United States, in exchange for help reclaiming Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona. British intelligence intercepted and decoded it, and its publication outraged American public opinion.
Around 4.7 million American troops served during World War 1, and roughly 2 million of them were sent to fight in Europe.
The Battle of Passchendaele (Third Battle of Ypres) in 1917 became infamous for the deep mud that soldiers and even tanks got stuck in, with some wounded men reportedly drowning in flooded shell craters.
The Gallipoli campaign of 1915 to 1916, an attempt by Allied forces to knock the Ottoman Empire out of the war, ended in failure and roughly 250,000 casualties on each side.
Gallipoli remains a defining moment in the national identities of Australia and New Zealand, whose combined ANZAC forces suffered heavy losses in the campaign.
Trench warfare created a stalemate largely because defensive weapons like machine guns and artillery had outpaced the tactics and technology available for attacking forces to break through.
A single machine gun crew could theoretically fire hundreds of rounds per minute, giving defenders in trenches a devastating advantage over troops advancing across open ground.
Life expectancy for a junior officer on the front line during major offensives could be measured in weeks, since officers were often targeted first by enemy snipers.
Trench foot, caused by prolonged exposure to cold, wet conditions, affected tens of thousands of soldiers and could lead to gangrene and amputation if untreated.
Rats infested the trenches in huge numbers, feeding on food scraps and, in the worst cases, on the bodies of the dead, and were blamed for spreading disease among soldiers.
Homing pigeons carried an estimated 100,000 or more messages during the war, and one pigeon named Cher Ami was credited with saving nearly 200 American soldiers trapped behind enemy lines in 1918 despite being severely wounded mid-flight.
The term "shell shock" was coined during World War 1 to describe the psychological trauma many soldiers experienced after prolonged exposure to artillery bombardment, an early recognition of what's now understood as post-traumatic stress disorder.
Some soldiers diagnosed with shell shock in the war's early years were treated as cowards or deserters, and a number were executed, before medical understanding of trauma slowly began to shift.
Germany's use of Zeppelin airships to bomb British cities beginning in 1915 marked some of the first aerial bombing raids on civilian populations in history.
Aerial combat was still new enough at the start of the war that pilots initially had no onboard weapons and would sometimes just wave or shoot pistols at enemy pilots as they passed.
The Red Baron, German fighter pilot Manfred von Richthofen, is credited with 80 confirmed aerial combat victories, the highest of any pilot in the war, before he was killed in action in 1918.
Britain's Royal Navy maintained a naval blockade of Germany throughout the war, which contributed to severe food shortages and malnutrition among German civilians by the war's final years.
Germany's use of unrestricted submarine warfare, targeting merchant and passenger ships without warning, was a major factor in bringing the United States into the war.
The Battle of Jutland in 1916 was the largest naval battle of the war, involving more than 250 ships, though it ended without a decisive victor.
Colonial troops from across the British and French empires, including from India, Africa, and Southeast Asia, made up a significant share of Allied forces on the Western Front.
More than 1 million Indian troops served overseas during the war, fighting in France, the Middle East, and Africa under British command.
Women took on roles in munitions factories, farms, and transport across many countries during the war, filling jobs left vacant as men went to fight, which reshaped attitudes toward women's work.
Nursing services like Britain's Voluntary Aid Detachment enlisted tens of thousands of women, some of whom served close to the front lines under dangerous conditions.
The war saw the first widespread military use of steel helmets, after early battles revealed how many head injuries soldiers in cloth caps were suffering from shrapnel.
Barbed wire, originally developed for fencing farmland, became one of the defining defensive tools of the war, strung in dense belts in front of trenches to slow enemy advances.
Flamethrowers were used in combat for the first time on a large scale during World War 1, first deployed by German forces in 1915.
The war introduced tracer ammunition, bullets that left a visible trail of light, letting machine gunners and pilots see where their shots were actually landing.
Sound ranging and flash spotting, techniques for pinpointing enemy artillery by triangulating the sound or flash of gunfire, became an important intelligence tool developed during the war.
The Russian Revolution of 1917 led Russia to withdraw from the war, and the new Bolshevik government signed the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk with Germany in March 1918, ceding large amounts of territory.
Germany launched a major offensive in spring 1918, known as the Spring Offensive, hoping to win the war before American troops could arrive in large numbers, but it ultimately failed.
The war ended with an armistice that took effect at 11 am on November 11, 1918, a moment now commemorated in many countries as Armistice Day or Remembrance Day.
Fighting continued right up until the armistice took effect, and thousands of soldiers on both sides were killed or wounded in the war's final hours, even though the ceasefire time was already known in advance.
American soldier Henry Gunther is generally recognized as the last soldier killed in World War 1, shot roughly 60 seconds before the 11 am armistice.
The Treaty of Versailles, signed in June 1919, officially ended the war between Germany and the Allied powers and imposed heavy reparations and territorial losses on Germany.
The Treaty of Versailles required Germany to accept sole responsibility for the war under its "war guilt" clause, a provision that fueled deep resentment in Germany for decades afterward.
World War 1 led to the creation of the League of Nations in 1920, an international organization intended to prevent future wars through collective diplomacy, though it lacked the power to stop World War 2 two decades later.
An estimated 8.5 to 10 million military personnel were killed during World War 1, with tens of millions more wounded.
Civilian deaths from the war, including from famine and disease linked to the conflict, are estimated at roughly 6 to 8 million people.
The war's end coincided with the start of the 1918 influenza pandemic, and the movement of millions of troops across the globe is believed to have helped spread the virus internationally.
World War 1 was sometimes called "the war to end all wars," a phrase popularized partly by writer H.G. Wells, in the hope that its scale would make future large-scale wars unthinkable.
The war saw the collapse of four major empires: the German, Austro-Hungarian, Russian, and Ottoman empires all fell either during or shortly after the conflict.
The breakup of the Ottoman Empire after the war led to new borders across the Middle East that still shape the region's politics today.
Poet Wilfred Owen, one of the most famous war poets of World War 1, was killed in action just one week before the armistice, and his mother reportedly received the telegram informing her of his death as church bells rang to celebrate the war's end.
The term "no man's land" became widely used during World War 1 to describe the deadly, shell-cratered ground between opposing trenches.
Some soldiers on both sides used trained dogs to carry messages, detect enemy movement, or locate wounded soldiers on the battlefield.
The war saw the first combat use of chemical weapons on a massive scale, and it directly led to the 1925 Geneva Protocol banning the use of chemical and biological weapons in warfare.
Britain introduced military conscription for the first time in its history in 1916, after early volunteer enlistment couldn't keep pace with the scale of casualties.
Some countries used camouflage patterns called "dazzle painting" on ships, geometric designs meant not to hide the vessel but to confuse enemy submarines about its speed, size, and heading.
The average life expectancy of a fighter pilot on the Western Front at certain points in the war was measured in just a few weeks of combat flying.
Chewing gum was issued to some American soldiers during the war partly to help relieve stress and combat the effects of poison gas exposure on the mouth and throat.
The war saw large-scale mining operations beneath enemy trenches, where soldiers dug tunnels to plant explosives directly under enemy positions; the Battle of Messines in 1917 used 19 such mines, and the explosions were reportedly heard as far away as London.
The Ottoman Empire's entry into the war in late 1914 opened new fronts in the Middle East, including the Gallipoli campaign and later British-led campaigns in Palestine and Mesopotamia.
T.E. Lawrence, known as Lawrence of Arabia, helped coordinate an Arab uprising against Ottoman rule during the war, later becoming a famous, if controversial, wartime figure.
Field hospitals and the demands of treating mass casualties during the war drove major advances in blood transfusion, wound treatment, and reconstructive surgery.
Blood banks as a practical wartime tool began to take shape during World War 1, after doctors developed methods to store and transport donated blood closer to the front lines.
Plastic surgery techniques advanced significantly during the war, partly through the work of surgeon Harold Gillies, who treated thousands of soldiers with severe facial injuries.
The war's staggering cost is estimated at well over $200 billion at the time, a figure equivalent to trillions of dollars today when adjusted for inflation.
Rationing of food and other goods became widespread on the home front in many countries as the war dragged on and resources were funneled toward the military.
Propaganda posters became a major tool of the war, used by governments on all sides to encourage enlistment, boost morale, and sell war bonds to fund the fighting.
War bonds sold to civilians helped finance much of the war's enormous cost, with governments running large public campaigns to encourage ordinary citizens to buy them.
The war accelerated the development of wireless radio communication, which militaries used for coordinating troop movements and intercepting enemy transmissions.
Submarines, still a relatively new technology at the war's start, proved so effective that German U-boats sank thousands of Allied and neutral merchant ships over the course of the conflict.
The convoy system, grouping merchant ships together under naval escort, was introduced partway through the war and significantly reduced losses to German U-boat attacks.
The war saw one of history's largest volunteer armies, as Britain alone raised more than 2.5 million volunteer soldiers before conscription began in 1916.
Some underage boys lied about their age to enlist, and it's estimated that as many as a quarter of a million underage soldiers may have served in the British Army during the war.
The youngest known verified British soldier of the war, Sidney Lewis, enlisted at age 12 and fought at the Battle of the Somme before his mother discovered where he was and had him sent home.
The war marked one of the first major conflicts where camouflage clothing and equipment were used systematically by multiple armies rather than the bright, distinctive uniforms common in earlier wars.
The Battle of Cambrai in 1917 marked the first large-scale, coordinated use of tanks in an offensive, with nearly 400 British tanks involved.
War correspondents and photographers documented the conflict extensively, though most nations imposed strict censorship on what could be published to maintain morale and hide sensitive military details.
Soldiers relied heavily on letters as their main link to home, and it's estimated that around 12 million letters were delivered to British troops every week at the war's peak.
The British Army developed a dedicated postal service during the war capable of delivering mail to soldiers on the front lines within just a few days of being posted.
The war produced an enormous number of monuments and cemeteries across Europe, and organizations like the Commonwealth War Graves Commission were formed specifically to maintain military graves and memorials after the fighting ended.
Many soldiers who died on the battlefield were never identified, leading multiple countries to create tombs of the unknown soldier as national memorials after the war.
The war's influence on literature was profound, producing enduring works like Erich Maria Remarque's "All Quiet on the Western Front," written from the perspective of a German soldier and later translated into dozens of languages.
The term "lost generation" came to describe young people who came of age during World War 1, many of whom felt disillusioned by the war's scale of loss and its aftermath.
Nurse Edith Cavell, who helped hundreds of Allied soldiers escape German-occupied Belgium, was executed by German firing squad in 1915, and her death became a powerful piece of Allied wartime propaganda.
Some soldiers on both sides kept pets, mascots, and even wild animals they'd found near the front, and stories of soldiers bonding with animals amid the destruction became a recurring theme in wartime memoirs.
New Zealand and Australia together lost a higher proportion of their populations in the war than most other countries involved, a toll that shaped both nations' national identity for generations afterward.
The war's end didn't bring immediate peace to all of Europe. Several new and reshaped nations faced continued conflict, revolutions, and border disputes well into the early 1920s.
The term "World War 1" wasn't in common use until after World War 2 began in 1939. Before that, it was typically just called "the Great War" or "the World War."
Time zones and standardized military time (using the 24-hour clock) became more widely adopted partly out of the wartime need to precisely coordinate attacks across large, multinational forces.
Aircraft technology advanced dramatically during the war's four years, progressing from flimsy reconnaissance planes at the start to more powerful, purpose-built fighters and bombers by 1918.
The Ottoman Empire's official entry into the war came after it allowed two German warships fleeing British pursuit to sail into Ottoman waters and later used them to bombard Russian Black Sea ports.
The war's staggering artillery bombardments, some lasting days at a time, could be heard from dozens or even over a hundred miles away in favorable weather conditions.
The war led to major advances in prosthetic limb design, as doctors and engineers worked to help hundreds of thousands of amputee veterans return to civilian life.
Britain's War Propaganda Bureau recruited well-known authors, including Arthur Conan Doyle and Rudyard Kipling, to help produce material supporting the war effort.
The war disrupted global trade so severely that some countries far from the fighting, including several in Latin America, saw major economic shifts as traditional European trading partners turned toward wartime production.
The 1918 armistice didn't end all fighting in the former Ottoman territories and parts of Eastern Europe, where conflicts tied to the war's aftermath continued for months or years afterward.
