All Saturn Facts

Saturn is the second-largest planet in the solar system, with a diameter of about 72,400 miles (116,500 km).
Saturn is named after the Roman god of agriculture and time, known as Cronus in Greek mythology.
The day Saturday takes its name from Saturn, one of the seven classical "planets" that gave English weekdays their names.
Saturn is the least dense planet in the solar system, with an average density lower than that of water.
If there were an ocean large enough to hold it, Saturn would float, since its overall density is less than water's.
A day on Saturn lasts only about 10.7 hours, making it the second-fastest rotating planet after Jupiter.
A year on Saturn lasts about 29.5 Earth years, the time it takes to complete one orbit around the Sun.
Saturn orbits the Sun at an average distance of about 886 million miles (1.4 billion km).
Like Jupiter, Saturn is a gas giant made up almost entirely of hydrogen and helium, with no solid surface to land on.
Saturn's fast rotation causes it to bulge noticeably at the equator, giving it a visibly flattened, oval shape.
Saturn's rings are made up mostly of countless chunks of water ice, ranging in size from tiny grains to boulders.
Despite stretching across hundreds of thousands of miles, Saturn's main rings are remarkably thin, in places less than a few hundred feet thick.
Saturn's rings are labeled alphabetically in the order they were discovered, not the order they appear from the planet outward.
The Cassini Division, a wide gap between Saturn's A and B rings, was first spotted by astronomer Giovanni Cassini in 1675.
Small moons called "shepherd moons" orbit within and near Saturn's rings, their gravity helping keep the ring particles confined into sharp, narrow bands.
Saturn's thin, braided F ring puzzled scientists when Voyager first photographed its unusual twisted structure in 1980.
Dark, radial markings called "spokes" occasionally appear and fade across Saturn's rings, thought to be linked to electrically charged dust.
Because Saturn's rings are tilted relative to its orbit, they appear to open and close from Earth's view over the course of its 29.5-year orbit.
Roughly every 15 years, Saturn's rings turn edge-on to Earth and briefly become almost invisible, even through a telescope.
Scientists have proposed several theories for how Saturn's rings formed, including a shattered moon, comet, or leftover material from the planet's early formation.
Some research suggests Saturn's rings may be a relatively young feature, possibly forming within only the last few hundred million years.
Saturn has more than 140 confirmed moons, one of the largest moon systems of any planet in the solar system.
Titan, Saturn's largest moon, is bigger than the planet Mercury and is the second-largest moon in the entire solar system.
Titan is the only moon in the solar system known to have a thick, substantial atmosphere, denser than Earth's.
Titan's atmosphere is mostly nitrogen, similar in composition to Earth's, though its surface conditions are radically different.
Titan has lakes, rivers, and rain, but instead of water they're made of liquid methane and ethane.
Titan's methane cycle behaves much like Earth's water cycle, with evaporation, clouds, and rainfall shaping its surface over time.
Beneath its icy shell, Titan is thought to hide a subsurface ocean of liquid water, adding it to the solar system's list of potential ocean worlds.
In 2005, the Huygens probe landed on Titan, becoming the first spacecraft to touch down on a moon in the outer solar system.
Images from the Huygens probe revealed a Titan landscape of rounded pebbles and drainage channels shaped by flowing liquid.
Enceladus, one of Saturn's icy moons, shoots huge plumes of water vapor and ice particles from cracks near its south pole.
The geysers on Enceladus are powerful evidence of a subsurface liquid water ocean hidden beneath its frozen crust.
Material erupting from Enceladus's geysers is thought to be the main source that feeds Saturn's faint, icy E ring.
Chemical analysis of Enceladus's plumes has detected molecular hydrogen, a potential energy source that could support microbial life in its hidden ocean.
Mimas, one of Saturn's moons, has a giant impact crater that gives it a striking resemblance to the fictional Death Star.
Iapetus, a two-toned moon of Saturn, has one hemisphere as dark as coal and the other bright and icy.
Iapetus also has an unusual ridge of mountains running along its equator, giving it a walnut-like shape unlike any other moon.
Hyperion, another of Saturn's moons, has a strange, spongy, deeply pitted appearance unlike anything else observed in the solar system.
Hyperion tumbles chaotically as it orbits Saturn, rather than rotating smoothly like most other moons.
Rhea, Saturn's second-largest moon, is composed largely of water ice and may have a very faint ring system of its own.
Saturn's north pole is capped by a bizarre, persistent hexagon-shaped jet stream, first spotted by the Voyager spacecraft in the early 1980s.
Saturn's hexagonal storm is so large that four Earths could fit inside it.
Scientists are still studying exactly why Saturn's polar jet stream settles into a six-sided hexagon rather than a circular shape.
Saturn experiences massive storms known as Great White Spots that erupt roughly once every Saturnian year, or about every 30 Earth years.
Winds in Saturn's atmosphere can reach speeds of over 1,100 miles per hour near the equator, among the fastest in the solar system.
Saturn's clouds are made largely of ammonia crystals, giving the planet its pale golden-yellow appearance.
Saturn radiates significantly more energy into space than it receives from the Sun, likely due to helium raining down through its interior.
Scientists think helium rain deep within Saturn releases friction-generated heat as it sinks toward the planet's core.
Saturn's magnetic field, while weaker than Jupiter's, is still hundreds of times stronger than Earth's.
Unusually, Saturn's magnetic field is nearly perfectly aligned with its rotational axis, unlike the magnetic fields of most other planets.
Saturn's mass is about 95 times that of Earth, despite its overall low density.
Saturn's gravity at its cloud tops is only slightly stronger than Earth's, roughly 1.07 times as strong.
Galileo Galilei first observed Saturn's rings through a telescope in 1610, though his equipment was too weak to reveal their true shape.
It wasn't until 1655 that astronomer Christiaan Huygens correctly identified Saturn's strange appendages as a flat ring surrounding the planet.
Pioneer 11 became the first spacecraft to fly past Saturn in 1979, paving the way for the more detailed Voyager missions that followed.
Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 both flew past Saturn in 1980 and 1981, sending back detailed images of its rings and moons.
NASA's Cassini spacecraft orbited Saturn from 2004 to 2017, becoming the first mission to orbit the ringed planet for an extended study.
The Cassini mission carried the Huygens probe to Titan and spent 13 years studying Saturn's rings, moons, and atmosphere up close.
Cassini ended its mission in 2017 with a deliberate "Grand Finale" plunge into Saturn's atmosphere, sending back data until the very last moment.
Cassini was intentionally destroyed in Saturn's atmosphere partly to prevent any risk of contaminating potentially habitable moons like Enceladus.
Saturn is bright enough to see with the naked eye and has been observed by skywatchers since ancient times.
Ancient Babylonian astronomers tracked Saturn's slow movement across the sky, associating it with their god Ninurta.
In Hindu astronomy, Saturn is known as Shani, associated with discipline and karma.
Through even a small backyard telescope, Saturn's rings are clearly visible, making it a favorite target for amateur astronomers.
Saturn's core is thought to be made of rock and ice, surrounded by thick layers of metallic and liquid hydrogen.
Some research suggests Saturn's core may be partially dissolved and diffuse rather than a sharply defined solid ball.
Saturn's average cloud-top temperature is a frigid -288°F (-178°C).
Saturn has faint auroras near its poles, driven by its magnetic field interacting with charged particles from the Sun.
Titan's thick atmosphere and low gravity mean a human wearing insulated wings could theoretically achieve powered flight there by flapping their arms.
Saturn's rings are made up of an estimated trillions of individual particles, ranging from dust-sized grains to house-sized chunks of ice.
Saturn's E ring, the widest of its rings, is fed continuously by the icy plumes erupting from Enceladus.
Small moonlets embedded within Saturn's rings can create propeller-shaped disturbances in the surrounding ring material.
Saturn's moon Pan orbits within a gap in the A ring and has a distinctive ridge around its equator, giving it a shape often compared to a ravioli.
Saturn's moon Daphnis creates visible waves in the edges of the Keeler Gap as its gravity disturbs nearby ring particles.
Some of Saturn's moons, called "trojan moons," share the same orbit as a larger moon, staying near stable points ahead of or behind it.
Tethys and Dione, two mid-sized moons of Saturn, each have small trojan companion moons sharing their orbital paths.
Saturn's moon system includes objects ranging from tiny ring-embedded moonlets to Titan, which is larger than the planet Mercury.
Many of Saturn's outer moons orbit backward relative to the planet's rotation, suggesting they were likely captured rather than formed alongside it.
Saturn's rings span an enormous width, over 170,000 miles across, yet contain relatively little total mass compared to the planet itself.
Saturn's atmosphere is banded like Jupiter's, though its bands are far more muted and harder to see due to a thick overlying haze.
Saturn's overlying haze layer is thought to be caused by chemical reactions between sunlight and hydrocarbons high in its atmosphere.
Saturn has no solid surface, so any spacecraft attempting to descend would sink through progressively denser layers of gas and liquid.
Saturn's low density means its overall gravitational pull, despite its huge size, is only a little stronger than Earth's at the cloud tops.
Data from Cassini suggested Saturn's rings may be much younger than the planet itself, possibly forming after the age of the dinosaurs on Earth.
Saturn's rings are gradually raining material down onto the planet, a process researchers call "ring rain," which may eventually deplete them.
Some estimates suggest Saturn's rings could disappear entirely within the next few hundred million years due to this ongoing ring rain.
Titan's dense atmosphere and thick orange haze make its surface completely invisible in ordinary visible-light photographs.
Radar and infrared instruments were needed to map Titan's surface features, since its haze blocks a direct view in visible light.
Titan's largest liquid methane sea, Kraken Mare, is estimated to be larger than several of the Great Lakes combined.
Because of Titan's thick atmosphere and low gravity, future robotic missions have proposed exploring it using floating boats or drone-like rotorcraft.
NASA's Dragonfly mission, planned to launch later this decade, aims to fly a nuclear-powered rotorcraft across Titan's surface to study its chemistry.
Saturn's axial tilt of about 27 degrees, close to Earth's, gives it seasons, though each one lasts more than seven Earth years.
As Saturn moves through its long orbit, the changing angle of sunlight on its rings makes them visibly brighten and dim over decades.
Enceladus is one of the most reflective objects in the solar system, its icy surface bouncing back almost all the sunlight that hits it.
Because Enceladus reflects so much sunlight, its surface stays extremely cold despite being warmed internally by tidal heating near its south pole.
Saturn's moon Phoebe orbits far outside the main moon system and backward compared to Saturn's rotation, suggesting it originated in the outer solar system.
Dust shed by Phoebe forms a giant, extremely faint outer ring around Saturn discovered by an infrared space telescope in 2009.
This outer Phoebe ring is so vast that if it could be seen with the naked eye, it would appear twice the size of the full Moon from Earth.
Saturn's moons range so widely in size and composition that scientists study them almost as a miniature solar system in their own right.
Saturn is the most distant planet from Earth that can still be easily seen with the naked eye under normal conditions.
New tiny moons of Saturn continue to be discovered using advanced tracking techniques, with dozens added to the official count in recent years.
Saturn's interior is thought to contain a layer of liquid metallic hydrogen, similar to Jupiter's, which helps generate its powerful magnetic field.
Saturn's rings can be divided into distinct sections separated by gaps carved out by the gravity of nearby moons.
The Encke Gap in Saturn's A ring is kept clear largely by the small moon Pan orbiting within it.
Saturn's overall appearance can shift subtly over its long year as storms, hazes, and cloud patterns evolve across the seasons.
Saturn's rings were once thought to be solid, until 19th-century mathematical analysis showed they must be made of countless small orbiting particles.
Astronomer James Clerk Maxwell won a prize in 1859 for mathematically proving that Saturn's rings could not be a single solid structure.
Saturn's largest moons are massive enough to be rounded into spheres by their own gravity, unlike its many small, irregularly shaped moonlets.
Data from the Cassini mission dramatically reshaped scientists' understanding of Enceladus, transforming it from an obscure ice ball into one of the solar system's top targets in the search for life.
Saturn remains one of the most photographed and studied planets in the solar system, thanks largely to the striking beauty of its ring system.
