All Venus Facts

Venus is named after the Roman goddess of love and beauty, the only planet in the solar system named for a female figure.
Venus is often called Earth's "twin" because the two planets are close in size, mass, and composition.
Venus's diameter is about 7,521 miles (12,104 km), roughly 95% the size of Earth.
Venus's mass is about 82% of Earth's, and its surface gravity is roughly 90% as strong.
Despite its similarities to Earth in size, Venus's surface conditions are so hostile it's sometimes called Earth's "evil twin."
Venus takes about 243 Earth days to rotate once on its axis, longer than the roughly 225 Earth days it takes to orbit the Sun.
Venus rotates in the opposite direction to most planets, a phenomenon called retrograde rotation.
Because of its slow, backward rotation, the Sun on Venus rises in the west and sets in the east.
Scientists suspect a massive ancient impact may explain why Venus rotates backward compared to most other planets.
Venus's axial tilt is only about 3 degrees, far less than Earth's, so it experiences essentially no meaningful seasons.
Venus orbits the Sun at an average distance of about 67 million miles (108 million km).
Venus is the second planet from the Sun and the closest planet to Earth on average.
Venus has the most nearly circular orbit of any planet in the solar system.
Venus's surface temperature averages around 900°F (475°C), hot enough to melt lead.
Venus is the hottest planet in the solar system, even hotter than Mercury, which is actually closer to the Sun.
Venus's extreme heat comes from a runaway greenhouse effect, where its thick atmosphere traps solar heat far more effectively than Earth's does.
Venus's atmosphere is roughly 96% carbon dioxide, one of the main drivers of its intense greenhouse effect.
The surface pressure on Venus is about 92 times that of Earth, similar to the pressure found nearly a mile deep in Earth's oceans.
Venus's crushing atmospheric pressure alone would be enough to destroy most spacecraft not specifically engineered to withstand it.
Venus is permanently shrouded in thick clouds made largely of sulfuric acid droplets.
Venus's cloud layer reflects about 70% of the sunlight that strikes it, making the planet extremely bright in Earth's sky.
Venus is the brightest planet visible from Earth, and the third-brightest natural object in our sky after the Sun and Moon.
Venus is sometimes called the "Morning Star" or "Evening Star" because of how brightly it shines near sunrise or sunset.
Under the right conditions, Venus is bright enough to be spotted with the naked eye even during full daylight.
Venus's dense clouds permanently block any direct view of its surface at visible wavelengths, so it had to be mapped using radar.
NASA's Magellan spacecraft used radar to map more than 98% of Venus's surface in the early 1990s.
Venus has more volcanoes than any other planet in the solar system, with over 1,600 major volcanic features identified.
Some scientists believe parts of Venus may still be volcanically active today, based on changing sulfur dioxide levels detected in its atmosphere.
In 2023, reanalyzed Magellan radar images revealed what appeared to be an active volcanic vent on Venus that changed shape between observations.
Venus's surface is dominated by vast volcanic plains, covering more than 80% of the planet.
Venus has surprisingly few impact craters, suggesting its surface was resurfaced by volcanic activity relatively recently, geologically speaking.
Some scientists estimate that most of Venus's surface may be only around 300 to 500 million years old, remarkably young for a planetary surface.
Venus has two large highland regions, Ishtar Terra and Aphrodite Terra, sometimes compared to continents on Earth.
Venus's tallest mountain, Maxwell Montes, rises about 6.8 miles (11 km) high, taller than Mount Everest.
Maxwell Montes is one of the only surface features on Venus named after a man, honoring physicist James Clerk Maxwell.
By convention, almost every surface feature on Venus is named after a real or mythological woman, honoring the planet's namesake goddess.
Venus has no moons and no ring system, unlike most of the other major planets.
Venus's atmosphere is so thick that surface winds barely move, yet its upper clouds race around the planet in only about four Earth days.
This phenomenon, called super-rotation, means Venus's atmosphere circles the planet many times faster than the planet itself actually rotates.
Scientists still don't fully understand what drives Venus's atmospheric super-rotation, and it remains an active area of research.
High in Venus's atmosphere, roughly 30 miles up, temperatures and pressures become much closer to Earth-like conditions.
The relatively mild conditions in Venus's upper cloud layer have led some scientists to propose future floating habitats or balloon missions there.
Venus has virtually no detectable global magnetic field, unlike Earth's protective one.
Without a strong magnetic field, Venus's atmosphere is gradually stripped away by the solar wind, though its thick atmosphere makes the loss very slow.
Venus has a faint, induced magnetic field created indirectly by the interaction between solar wind and its upper atmosphere.
In 1962, NASA's Mariner 2 flew past Venus and became the first spacecraft to successfully reach another planet.
The Soviet Union's Venera 7 became the first spacecraft to successfully land on another planet when it touched down on Venus in 1970.
Venera 7 survived on the scorching Venusian surface for only about 23 minutes before its instruments failed under the extreme heat and pressure.
In 1975, Venera 9 sent back the first images ever taken from the surface of another planet.
Venera 13 transmitted the first color photographs from the surface of Venus in 1982, revealing an orange-tinted rocky landscape.
Venera 13 holds the record for the longest survival time on Venus's surface by a lander, lasting about two hours before succumbing to the heat.
The Soviet Union sent more successful landers to Venus than any nation has sent to any other planet's surface.
Japan's Akatsuki spacecraft has been studying Venus's atmosphere and weather patterns from orbit since 2015.
The European Space Agency's Venus Express orbiter studied the planet's atmosphere and climate from 2006 to 2014.
NASA has selected two new missions to Venus, DAVINCI and VERITAS, planned to study its atmosphere, geology, and surface composition in detail.
The European Space Agency's planned EnVision mission aims to study whether Venus is still geologically active today.
In 2020, an international team of astronomers reported a controversial detection of phosphine gas in Venus's clouds, a possible but disputed biosignature.
The phosphine detection on Venus sparked debate among scientists, and follow-up studies have produced conflicting results.
Some researchers have speculated that microbial life could theoretically survive in the more temperate upper cloud layers of Venus, though this remains unproven.
Venus's clouds are so acidic that any hypothetical life there would need to be radically different from anything found on Earth.
A rare astronomical event called a transit of Venus occurs when the planet passes directly between Earth and the Sun, visible as a small black dot crossing the solar disk.
Transits of Venus are extremely rare, occurring in pairs roughly eight years apart, separated by gaps of over a century.
The most recent transit of Venus took place in 2012; the next won't occur again until 2117.
Historic observations of Venus transits in the 18th and 19th centuries helped astronomers calculate the distance between Earth and the Sun.
Galileo Galilei's observation of Venus's phases in the early 1600s provided key evidence supporting the heliocentric model of the solar system.
Like the Moon, Venus goes through visible phases as seen from Earth, changing from a thin crescent to a full disk over months.
Ancient Mayan astronomers tracked Venus with remarkable precision, building an entire calendar system around its movements.
Many ancient cultures believed Venus's appearance as both a "morning star" and "evening star" meant it was actually two separate celestial objects.
In Babylonian astronomy, Venus was associated with the goddess Ishtar, linked to love and war.
In Hindu astronomy, Venus is known as Shukra, associated with beauty, wealth, and pleasure.
Venus is easily visible with the naked eye and requires no telescope to spot, making it one of the most recognized objects in the night sky.
Despite its brightness, Venus's dense cloud cover means even powerful telescopes reveal almost no surface detail in visible light.
Venus's clouds circulate in distinct layers, with different wind speeds and chemical compositions at different altitudes.
Lightning has been detected in Venus's atmosphere, though scientists debate exactly how frequently it occurs compared to storms on Earth.
Venus experiences no rainfall of liquid water, since its surface is far too hot for water to exist in liquid form.
Some scientists believe Venus may have once had oceans of liquid water billions of years ago, before a runaway greenhouse effect boiled them away.
If Venus once had oceans, their evaporation is thought to have contributed enormous amounts of water vapor, and eventually carbon dioxide, to its atmosphere.
Venus is sometimes studied by scientists as a cautionary example of how a runaway greenhouse effect can transform an Earth-like planet.
Venus's proximity to Earth makes it one of the easiest planets to reach with a spacecraft, even though its conditions are far harsher.
A one-way trip to Venus takes roughly four to five months using current spacecraft propulsion.
Venus is often used for gravity-assist maneuvers, helping spacecraft gain speed on their way to more distant destinations in the solar system.
NASA's Parker Solar Probe has used repeated gravity assists from Venus to gradually tighten its orbit toward the Sun.
Venus's dense atmosphere would make sound travel more efficiently there than on Earth, though the extreme heat and pressure would destroy any human instantly.
The pressure and heat on Venus's surface caused Soviet landers to be crushed and cooked within hours despite specialized heat shielding and pressure vessels.
Venus's surface is dry and largely free of the erosion patterns seen on planets with active weather involving liquid water.
Venus has unusual circular volcanic features called "coronae," formed by rising plumes of hot material pushing up from deep within the planet.
Venus also has flat-topped volcanic domes called "pancake domes," thought to form from thick, slow-flowing lava.
Venus lacks plate tectonics in the same style as Earth, and instead may release internal heat through periodic, planet-wide resurfacing events.
Some researchers propose that Venus experiences episodic upheavals, where large portions of its crust are resurfaced in relatively short geological bursts.
Venus's interior is thought to be similar to Earth's, with a core, mantle, and crust, though its exact internal structure remains uncertain.
Venus is close enough to Earth in size and composition that some scientists once assumed it might harbor jungles or oceans before spacecraft revealed the truth.
Early 20th-century science fiction often imagined Venus as a swampy, tropical world, an idea long since disproven by direct observation.
Venus is the only planet in the solar system whose day is longer than its year.
Because of its slow rotation, a person standing on Venus would experience roughly two sunrises for every Venusian year.
Venus's cloud tops reflect sunlight so effectively that the planet appears as a brilliant, featureless white-yellow disk through ordinary telescopes.
Ultraviolet imaging reveals streaky, banded cloud patterns on Venus that are completely invisible in normal visible light.
A mysterious ultraviolet-absorbing substance in Venus's clouds creates dark markings that scientists have never fully identified.
Venus's clouds sit at altitudes roughly 30 to 40 miles above the surface, far higher than most clouds on Earth.
Because Venus and Earth have similar sizes, scientists sometimes describe Venus's harsh evolution as a warning about the limits of planetary habitability.
Venus's proximity and brightness have made it one of the most observed and studied planets throughout human history.
Venus has no seasons in the traditional sense, since its nearly upright axial tilt means sunlight strikes the planet almost the same way year-round.
Venus's atmosphere contains a small percentage of nitrogen, the second most abundant gas after carbon dioxide.
Trace amounts of sulfur dioxide in Venus's atmosphere are closely monitored by scientists as a possible indicator of ongoing volcanic activity.
Venus's overall chemical makeup suggests it formed from similar raw material to Earth, making its dramatically different fate especially useful for comparative planetary science.
Because Venus's orbit lies inside Earth's, it always appears close to the Sun in the sky and is best viewed shortly after sunset or before sunrise.
Venus can occasionally be seen passing extremely close to other bright planets in the sky during rare planetary conjunctions.
Venus's high reflectivity, or albedo, is due almost entirely to its thick cloud deck rather than its actual rocky surface.
If Venus's clouds were stripped away, its underlying surface would likely appear as a dark, rocky landscape rather than the bright white disk seen from Earth.
Venus remains one of the least explored rocky planets in terms of surface landers, largely because of the extreme engineering challenges its environment poses.
Upcoming missions to Venus are expected to use radar and durable, heat-resistant designs to finally study its surface and atmosphere together in far greater detail.
