• Madrid's Sobrino de Botin has been serving customers since 1725 without ever closing, moving, or changing its name, and Guinness World Records recognizes it as the oldest restaurant on Earth. Ernest Hemingway was a regular, and its 300 year old wood oven is still fired up every day.
• The word siesta comes from the Latin hora sexta, the sixth hour after dawn, when Roman farm workers paused for a midday break to escape the heat. Spain's modern siesta schedule, with many shops closing for two to three hours in the afternoon, was actually formalized under dictator Francisco Franco.
• The world's biggest tomato fight started by accident in 1945, when a scuffle at a parade in the small town of Bunol ended with someone grabbing tomatoes from a nearby stall and throwing them. The tradition was banned in the 1950s, brought back after public protest, and now draws thousands of people who throw tons of tomatoes at each other every August.
• Spain has 50 UNESCO World Heritage Sites, the fifth most of any country, behind only Italy, China, Germany, and France.
• Barcelona's Sagrada Familia has been under construction since 1882 and still isn't finished. Its main structure reached full height in February 2026 when the final spire was completed, but the Glory Facade and other decorative elements aren't expected to be done until around 2034, more than 150 years after the first stone was laid.
