• As of a 2023 recount, Japan is officially made up of 14,125 islands, more than double the 6,852 the government had counted for decades. Only about 430 of them are permanently inhabited, and just the four main islands, Honshu, Hokkaido, Kyushu, and Shikoku, cover roughly 97% of the country's land area.
• The world's oldest documented company was founded in Japan in 578 AD. Kongo Gumi started when Korean carpenters were invited to build the Buddhist temple Shitenno-ji in Osaka, and the family construction firm they founded kept operating for more than 1,400 years before becoming a subsidiary of a larger company in 2006.
• A hot spring inn in Yamanashi Prefecture has been welcoming guests since 705 AD. Nishiyama Onsen Keiunkan holds the Guinness World Record for oldest hotel on Earth, certified in 2011 after more than 1,300 years in business.
• Japan's bullet trains have carried passengers since 1964 without a single passenger fatality from a train accident. The Tokaido Shinkansen has averaged well under a minute of delay per train for decades, sometimes as low as 24 seconds, and a delay of just 30 to 60 seconds can still be enough for the operator to issue a formal apology.
• The English name 'Japan' comes from a chain of mistranslation. Marco Polo never actually visited the country, but he wrote about it as 'Cipangu' based on what he heard secondhand in China, a garbled transcription of the Chinese pronunciation of characters meaning 'origin of the sun'. The Japanese have always called their own country Nippon or Nihon.
• Japan has around 4 million vending machines, roughly one for every 23 to 30 people, the highest density of any country on Earth. The US has almost as many machines in total, but they're spread across a country more than 25 times the land area with nearly three times the population.
• Every evening for almost a decade, an Akita dog named Hachiko sat at Shibuya Station waiting for an owner who was never coming back. Professor Hidesaburo Ueno died suddenly at work in 1925, but Hachiko kept returning to the station until his own death in 1935, and a bronze statue of him was installed outside the station in 1934, while he was still alive to see it.
• The Japanese macaques of Jigokudani in Nagano are the only troop of wild monkeys in the world known to bathe in hot springs. It started by accident in 1963, when an apple rolled into the water and a young monkey chased it in, discovered how warm it was, and the whole troop eventually picked up the habit.
• Greater Tokyo, the capital plus six surrounding prefectures, is home to about 41 million people, more than the entire population of Canada, making it the most populous metropolitan area on the planet.
• Japan has more people over the age of 100 than any other country, a record 99,763 as of September 2025, up for the 55th year in a row since the government started counting in 1963, when there were only 153. About 88% of them are women.
• Karaoke was invented in 1971 by Kobe drummer Daisuke Inoue, who built the first machine from a tape recorder, a coin box, and an amplifier so bar patrons could sing without a live backing band. He never patented it, believing he'd only combined parts that already existed, and by one estimate missed out on close to $100 million a year as the karaoke industry grew into a global business worth billions.
• The world's first capsule hotel opened in Osaka on February 1, 1979. Capsule Inn Osaka was designed by architect Kisho Kurokawa, commissioned by a sauna owner who wanted somewhere better than his sauna floor for customers who'd missed the last train home.
• Real Kobe beef has to come from purebred Tajima cattle born, raised, and slaughtered entirely within Hyogo Prefecture, with a marbling score of 6 or higher and a carcass weight capped at 470 kg. The rules are so strict that fewer than 0.2% of all beef produced in Japan each year actually qualifies.
• Japan's imperial line is the oldest continuous hereditary monarchy in the world, officially traced back to 660 BC and spanning 126 monarchs. Emperor Akihito's abdication in 2019 was the first time a Japanese emperor had stepped down from the Chrysanthemum Throne in about 200 years.
• The magnitude 9.0 earthquake that struck northeastern Japan in March 2011 was powerful enough to physically move the coastline. GPS data showed parts of the coast shifted east by up to 4 meters, and the quake dragged some areas of the country roughly 2.4 meters closer to North America.
• Mount Fuji hasn't erupted since December 1707, when it buried Edo, modern day Tokyo, in volcanic ash for over two weeks despite being about 100 km away. It's still classified as an active volcano today.
• Sushi didn't start out as raw fish on rice. It began as narezushi, a preservation method that packed salted fish in fermented rice for months at a time, and for centuries people threw the fermented rice away and ate only the fish. Combining the two together only became common around the 1500s, centuries before anything resembling modern sushi appeared.
• Japanese uses three writing systems at once. Hiragana and katakana each have 46 characters covering the same set of sounds, while kanji, adapted from Chinese, runs into the thousands, and a literate adult typically knows around 2,000 of them just to read a newspaper.
• The small island of Naoshima in the Seto Inland Sea has turned itself into an open air art museum, best known for Yayoi Kusama's giant yellow polka dot pumpkin sitting on a pier facing the ocean. A typhoon swept the original sculpture into the sea in 2021, so the team rebuilt it and unveiled a new one in 2022.
• Spirited Away became the first anime film, and the only hand drawn film, to win the Oscar for Best Animated Feature, taking the award at the 2003 ceremony just one year after the category was created.
• Japan's most sacred Shinto shrine has been completely torn down and rebuilt every 20 years for roughly 1,300 years, a ritual called Shikinen Sengu. Each rebuild takes about 8 years and uses techniques identical to the previous one, and timber from the old buildings gets recycled into shrines elsewhere in the country.
• Up to 3,000 people cross Tokyo's Shibuya Scramble at once every time the lights change, all directions at once, and an estimated 1 million pedestrians pass through it on a typical day, making it the busiest pedestrian crossing in the world.
• Pokemon is the highest grossing media franchise ever created, with an estimated lifetime revenue of about $288 billion since its 1996 launch as a Game Boy game, more than Hello Kitty, Star Wars, and Mickey Mouse each individually.
• Japan recorded just 671,236 births in 2025, a record low for the 10th year running, while deaths outnumbered births by more than 900,000. The population, currently around 124 million, is projected to shrink to about 87 million by 2070.
• Japan sits where four tectonic plates meet and is home to roughly 10% of all the world's active volcanoes. That same geology drives the roughly 1,500 earthquakes felt across the country every year.
• The Seikan Tunnel connecting the islands of Honshu and Hokkaido runs 53.85 km beneath the sea floor of the Tsugaru Strait, making it the longest undersea rail tunnel in the world.
• Sumo is Japan's oldest sport, with roots going back more than 1,500 years to matches described in the country's earliest historical chronicles, the Kojiki and Nihon Shoki. Unlike almost every other combat sport, it has no weight classes at all, so wrestlers can end up facing opponents more than 100 kg heavier than themselves.
• Tokyo has more Michelin starred restaurants than any other city on Earth, 160 of them, more than Paris in second place, and it has held that title for over 15 years running.
• Japan now has more pet cats and dogs than children. As of 2025 there were about 15.9 million registered cats and dogs compared to just 13.7 million children under 15, a gap that first opened back in 2003 and has kept widening ever since.
