• Nobody agrees on exactly how many islands Greece has: estimates range from about 1,200 to 6,000 depending on how small a rock still counts. What is settled is that only 166 to 227 of them are actually inhabited, so the overwhelming majority are empty scrub and cliff that nobody calls home.
• Greece's mainland is smaller than the U.S. state of Alabama, yet its coastline runs 13,676 kilometers (8,498 miles), one of the longest in the world. Stretch that shoreline into a straight line and it would wrap almost exactly a third of the way around the Earth's equator, nearly all of it created by the country's thousands of islands rather than its mainland shore.
• About 80 percent of Greece is mountainous or semi-mountainous, topped by Mount Olympus at 2,917 meters (9,573 feet). That's why so many Greek villages are built clinging to slopes and cliffs instead of spreading out across open plains.
• Crete, Greece's largest island, covers 8,336 square kilometers (3,219 square miles), bigger than the country's next two largest islands combined. It stretches 260 kilometers (161 miles) from end to end and is home to more than 636,000 people, more than any other Greek island.
• Santorini's dramatic crescent shape exists because its volcano collapsed into the sea, leaving behind the caldera tourists photograph today. That volcano hasn't gone anywhere: it last erupted in 1950, sending out lava flows with no injuries, and scientists still monitor it closely.
• Monks began building on the sandstone pillars of Meteora in the 14th century, eventually raising 24 monasteries on top of columns so steep the only way up was a rope net hauled by hand winch. Only six of those monasteries are still standing today, and Meteora was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1988 for the combination of natural rock formations and monastic architecture.
• Mount Athos, a peninsula in northern Greece, still functions today as an autonomous monastic state governed by 20 monasteries, a system that has run largely unchanged for centuries. Women are legally barred from setting foot on the peninsula at all, and even male visitors need a special permit called a diamonitirion, arriving the way pilgrims always have: by boat.
• Greece, a country of about 10 million people, controls more merchant shipping capacity than any other nation on Earth. Greek shipowners held 16.4 percent of the world's deadweight tonnage in 2025, ahead of second-place China (14.4 percent) and third-place Japan (9.9 percent).

• Only cheese made in specific regions of Greece, from sheep's milk or a mix that's at most 30 percent goat's milk and aged at least three months in brine, can legally be called feta in the European Union. • Greece is home to 21 UNESCO World Heritage Sites, more than most countries many times its size, including monastic communities like Meteora and Mount Athos and entire historic town centers.
• Greece's national anthem, the Hymn to Liberty, began life in 1823 as a poem with 158 stanzas celebrating the Greek War of Independence against Ottoman rule. Only the first two stanzas are actually used as the anthem today, the other 156 are essentially retired lyrics nobody has to memorize.
