• Cairo is the largest city in Africa and the Arab world, with a metropolitan population topping 22 million, more people than live in the entire country of the Netherlands, packed into one urban sprawl along the Nile. It's nicknamed 'the city of a thousand minarets', and its film and music industries make it the undisputed media capital of the Arabic-speaking world.
• Egypt is a transcontinental country: everything west of the Suez Canal sits in Africa, while the Sinai Peninsula, roughly 60,000 square kilometers east of the canal, an area larger than Croatia, belongs to Asia. Cross a single canal and you've changed continents without ever leaving Egyptian territory.
• Egypt is home to more than 120 million people, but 95% of them live on just 5.5% of the country's land: the narrow ribbon of the Nile Valley and Delta. Nearly everywhere else is desert, with the Western Desert alone covering roughly two-thirds of the country and almost nobody living in it.

It went from discovery to production in barely two years, one of the fastest deepwater gas field developments on record, and by 2019 was pumping out 2.7 billion cubic feet a day.
• Egypt's Red Sea coast is lined with roughly 2,000 kilometers of coral reef that has been growing continuously for 5,000 to 7,000 years, making it one of the oldest living reef systems on the planet. More than 1,200 fish species swim through it, one in ten found nowhere else on Earth, which is why the Red Sea consistently ranks among the world's top scuba diving destinations.
• Egyptian cotton fiber must measure at least 35 millimeters to earn the official 'extra-long staple' classification, well beyond the roughly 24 millimeters that ordinary short-staple cotton tops out at. That extra length lets spinners twist a finer, stronger thread, which is why five-star hotels and premium bedding brands still put 'Egyptian cotton' on the label as shorthand for quality.
• Koshari, a carb-heavy mix of rice, lentils, macaroni, and chickpeas topped with crispy fried onions and tangy tomato sauce, is Egypt's national dish, and it isn't even originally Egyptian. British colonial rule brought Indian khichdi and Italian pasta into the country in the 19th century, Egyptians combined the two, and British explorer Richard Burton documented street vendors already selling it in Suez by 1853.
• Egyptian Arabic has roughly 119 million speakers, but its real reach goes far beyond Egypt's borders: it's the most widely understood Arabic dialect anywhere in the Middle East and North Africa. Decades of Egyptian films, TV dramas, and pop music exported from Cairo, once nicknamed 'the Hollywood of the Middle East', turned the local dialect into the region's shared pop-culture language, and even Lebanese and Gulf singers often choose to sing in Egyptian Arabic instead of their own.
• When it opened in 1987, the Cairo Metro became the first full subway system anywhere in Africa or the Arab world, built to ease the gridlock of one of the world's most densely populated cities. Nearly four decades later, its three lines and 89 stations carry around 5 million passengers every single day.
• East of Cairo, in what used to be empty desert, Egypt built a brand-new capital city from the ground up: since 2024 it has officially served as the seat of the Egyptian government, and it's designed to eventually house 6.5 million residents. Its centerpiece, the Iconic Tower, rises 394 meters across 77 floors, the tallest building anywhere in Africa.
• The Grand Egyptian Museum officially opened on November 1, 2025, after roughly $1.2 billion in construction, and it's now the largest museum in the world built around a single civilization's heritage. Spread across 500,000 square meters near Giza, it already draws around 19,000 visitors a day.
• Egypt welcomed nearly 19 million tourists in 2025, a 21% jump from the year before that far outpaced the roughly 5% average growth the rest of the global tourism industry saw that year. Tourism revenue climbed 17% in the same period, making Egypt the world's third-fastest-growing country for tourism income, right behind Morocco and South Korea.
• In 1988, novelist Naguib Mahfouz became the first, and to date still the only, Arabic-language writer to win the Nobel Prize in Literature. Over his career he wrote more than 30 novels and 350 short stories, many of them set in the alleys of Cairo, and he kept writing well into his 90s, right up until his death in 2006.
• Egyptian footballer Mohamed Salah scored 32 goals in Liverpool's 2017-18 Premier League season, still the single-season record for a 38-game campaign. Nicknamed 'the Egyptian King', he went on to become the Premier League's all-time top foreign goalscorer and Africa's all-time top scorer in the UEFA Champions League, while captaining Egypt's national team with 68 international goals in over 120 caps.
• Egypt has won the Africa Cup of Nations seven times, more than any other nation in the tournament's history. Between 2006 and 2010 they won three tournaments in a row, a three-peat no other country has ever matched.
• On July 23, 1952, a group of military officers led by Gamal Abdel Nasser overthrew King Farouk in a nearly bloodless coup, ending both the 150-year Muhammad Ali dynasty and decades of British influence in Egypt. Egypt was declared a republic, and within a few years Nasser had become one of the most influential leaders in the modern Arab world.
• When Egyptian President Gamal Abdel Nasser nationalized the Suez Canal on July 26, 1956, Britain, France, and Israel responded by invading Egypt within three months. International pressure, especially from the United States, forced all three countries to withdraw within weeks, a diplomatic humiliation historians point to as marking the end of Britain's status as a global superpower.
• For 18 days in January and February 2011, hundreds of thousands of Egyptians occupied Cairo's Tahrir Square in mass protests against President Hosni Mubarak's government. On February 11, 2011, Mubarak resigned after nearly three decades in power, ending one of the longest presidencies in modern Egyptian history.
• Egypt's population crossed 120 million in 2026, making it the most populous country in the Arab world and the third-most populous in Africa, behind only Nigeria and Ethiopia. Yet the median Egyptian is just 24.7 years old, and roughly a third of the entire country is under the age of 15.
• In April 1955, Egyptian President Gamal Abdel Nasser traveled to Bandung, Indonesia, to join the Asian-African Conference alongside Indonesia's Sukarno and India's Jawaharlal Nehru, an event that represented 29 newly independent nations and 1.5 billion people. The conference's principles laid the groundwork for the Non-Aligned Movement, a global bloc that Egypt and Indonesia both helped found and still belong to today.
