• Almost 70 percent of Germany's autobahn network has no permanent speed limit, a policy dating back to 1952. It's not lawless: unrestricted sections still carry a recommended speed of 130 km/h (81 mph), drivers just won't get a ticket for going faster.
• Germany's autobahn network stretches roughly 13,210 kilometers (8,210 miles), making it the third-longest motorway system in the world, trailing only the United States and China.

• The Volkswagen Beetle was built for 65 years straight, from 1938 to 2003, with more than 21.5 million units produced. On February 17, 1972, it overtook the Ford Model T to become the best-selling car in history, a title the humble 'people's car' held for decades.
• The Berlin Wall stood for exactly 28 years, 2 months, and 27 days, from August 13, 1961, until November 9, 1989. It fell almost by accident: an East German official misspoke about new travel rules at a press conference, and thousands of Berliners showed up at the checkpoints that same night demanding to cross.
• Germany reunified on October 3, 1990, just 328 days after the Berlin Wall fell. The date is now the country's only nationwide public holiday required by federal law: Tag der Deutschen Einheit, German Unity Day.
• Cologne Cathedral took 632 years to finish. Construction began in 1248, stalled for nearly 300 years starting in 1528, and finally wrapped up in 1880, when the 157-meter (515-foot) cathedral briefly became the tallest building on the planet, a title it held for four years before being overtaken.
• Frankfurt has hosted trade fairs since 1240, when Holy Roman Emperor Frederick II granted the city fair privileges. That makes it home to the oldest continuously running trade fair tradition in the world, and it eventually grew into the Frankfurt Book Fair, still the biggest publishing event on the planet.
• Around 1450, Johannes Gutenberg opened a print shop in Mainz, financed by an 800-guilder loan from a wealthy backer, a serious sum for the time. Within a few years his workshop produced the Gutenberg Bible, the book that helped trigger Europe's printing revolution.
• Albert Einstein was born in Ulm, Germany, on March 14, 1879, and his family moved to Munich just six weeks later. He'd go on to win the 1921 Nobel Prize in Physics, not for relativity, but for his explanation of the photoelectric effect.
• On August 10, 1897, Bayer chemist Felix Hoffmann synthesized a stable, pure form of acetylsalicylic acid, the compound that became aspirin. Bayer trademarked the name in Germany less than two years later, on March 6, 1899, and it's been in medicine cabinets worldwide ever since.

• Oktoberfest started as a wedding party. On October 12, 1810, Munich threw a public celebration for the marriage of Crown Prince Ludwig of Bavaria to Princess Therese, complete with a horse race, and the city liked it so much they just kept doing it every year.
• Modern Oktoberfest draws more than six million visitors to Munich every year, all served beer in one-liter mugs called Maß. It remains the world's largest folk festival, still tracing back to that 1810 royal wedding two centuries later.
• In 1516, Duke Wilhelm IV of Bavaria signed the Reinheitsgebot, a law limiting beer ingredients to just water, barley, and hops. It stayed on the books for 477 years, until 1993, making it one of the oldest food-quality regulations in history, even though yeast obviously had to get added to the list once anyone understood what it did.
• Walt Disney toured Bavaria in 1935 and came home with the silhouette of Neuschwanstein Castle in his head. It became the template for Sleeping Beauty's Castle at Disneyland and, indirectly, Cinderella Castle at Walt Disney World: a 19th-century Bavarian fantasy that ended up shaping American theme parks.
• King Ludwig II planned 200 rooms for Neuschwanstein Castle. Only 15 were ever finished before he died in 1886, just months after moving in, yet the unfinished fairy-tale castle still pulls in more than 1.4 million visitors a year.
• Germany is home to more than 25,000 castles and palaces, roughly one every 25 kilometers if spread evenly across the country. Centuries of political fragmentation are the reason: hundreds of independent dukes, bishops, and princes each guarded their own patch of territory.
• Return a plastic bottle in Germany and you'll almost always get your deposit back: the country's Pfand system hits a 97 to 98 percent return rate for single-use containers, the highest of any deposit scheme in the world. The deposit is a flat 25 cents, whether it's a tiny energy drink can or a liter bottle of water.

• For 14 years, Germany had an official law with a 63-letter name: the Rinderkennzeichnungs- und Rindfleischetikettierungsüberwachungsaufgabenübertragungsgesetz, a beef-labeling regulation passed after a mad cow disease outbreak. Lawmakers in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern repealed it in 2013, and Germans' love of stacking nouns into one giant word lost its most famous real-world example.
• HARIBO isn't a made-up word, it's an acronym: HAns RIegel, BOnn, named for its founder and hometown. Hans Riegel started the company in his Bonn kitchen in 1920, and by 1922 he'd invented the Tanzbär, or 'dancing bear,' the fruit gum that became the modern gummy bear.
