In 1516, Duke Wilhelm IV of Bavaria signed the Reinheitsgebot, a law limiting beer ingredients to just water, barley, and hops. It stayed on the books for 477 years, until 1993, making it one of the oldest food-quality regulations in history, even though yeast obviously had to get added to the list once anyone understood what it did.
