Random facts about Brazil, from the Amazon rainforest and record-breaking football history to Carnival and Christ the Redeemer.
The hyacinth macaw is the largest flying parrot species in the world, measuring about a meter, just over three feet, from beak to tail. Its bite can exert more than 300 pounds of pressure per square inch, strong enough to crack the rock-hard nuts of Brazil's acuri palm that almost no other animal can open. There's a catch: acuri nuts are often too tough even for the macaws to eat fresh off the tree, so in the Pantanal they wait for cattle to eat and digest the nuts first, then pick the softened seeds back out of the cow dung.
