• The Amazon rainforest sprawls across about 2.3 million square miles of South America, and roughly 60% of that entire forest sits inside Brazil, more than the other eight Amazon-basin countries hold combined. It's the richest biological reservoir on the planet, home to several million species of insects, plants, and animals, a huge number of which scientists still haven't formally identified.
• Brazil covers about 8.5 million square kilometers, making it the fifth largest country on Earth after Russia, Canada, China, and the United States. It's actually a bit bigger than the entire contiguous United States, all 48 states combined, even though Brazil rarely looks that large on a standard world map.
• Brazil shares a border with ten different countries: Argentina, Bolivia, Colombia, French Guiana, Guyana, Paraguay, Peru, Suriname, Uruguay, and Venezuela. The only two nations on the South American mainland it doesn't touch are Chile and Ecuador, both tucked on the Pacific side behind the Andes mountains.
• The Christ the Redeemer statue above Rio de Janeiro stands 30 meters tall, about 98 feet, not counting its 8-meter pedestal, and weighs 635 metric tons. It took nine years to build, finished in 1931, and its outstretched arms span almost 28 meters from fingertip to fingertip, making it the largest Art Deco sculpture in the world.
• Brazil has won the FIFA World Cup five times, in 1958, 1962, 1970, 1994, and 2002, more than any other country in history. The next best record belongs to Germany and Italy, both with four titles, still one short of Brazil's total.
• Pelé was just 17 years and 249 days old when Brazil won the 1958 World Cup, making him the youngest player ever to win the tournament, a record that still stands. He scored twice in the final against Sweden and was in tears by the final whistle, an image that turned him into a national hero before he'd finished his teenage years.
• Rio de Janeiro's street Carnival holds the Guinness World Record for the largest carnival on the planet, pulling in around 2 million revelers a day during its week-long run. More than 5 million people take part across the full event, filling the city with samba parades, costumed street parties called blocos, and music that barely stops.
• Brazil is named after a tree, not the other way around. Portuguese traders in the 1500s found a hardwood along the coast that produced a deep red dye, called pau-brasil, and shipped it back to Europe by the ton for the textile industry. The trade became so central to the colony that people started calling the whole territory Terra do Brasil, the land of Brazil, and the name outlasted the dye trade by centuries.
• Brazil declared independence from Portugal on September 7, 1822, in a moment known as the Cry of Ipiranga. Prince Dom Pedro was riding near the Ipiranga brook outside São Paulo when he received an order from Lisbon to return and submit Brazil back to colonial rule. He tore the Portuguese insignia off his coat, drew his sword, and declared Brazil's independence on the spot, becoming its first emperor a few months later.
• Brazil's capital, Brasília, was carved out of the country's empty interior and inaugurated on April 21, 1960, just 41 months after construction began. President Juscelino Kubitschek wanted to pull national focus away from the crowded coastline, so architect Oscar Niemeyer and planner Lúcio Costa designed an entire city, laid out in the shape of an airplane, in a place that barely had roads leading to it. It's now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, one of the few 20th-century cities to earn that title.
• The Amazon River carries more water than the next six largest rivers on Earth combined, discharging roughly 209,000 cubic meters of water into the Atlantic Ocean every second. That single river accounts for about one-fifth of all the freshwater that drains off the planet's land surface, and its outflow is strong enough to dilute the ocean's saltiness more than 100 miles from shore.
• The capybara, the world's largest rodent, wades through Brazil's wetlands weighing up to 65 kilograms, about as heavy as an adult human. It's especially common in the Pantanal, Brazil's vast western floodplain, where they live in tight social groups of 10 to 20 and communicate through purrs, whistles, barks, and even teeth-chattering.

• São Paulo is the largest city in the Southern Hemisphere, with a metro-area population pushing 23 million people, almost three times the population of New York City packed into one Brazilian metro region. It started out in 1554 as a small Jesuit mission on a hilltop overlooking the Tietê River, and had only around 300 residents by the end of that century.
• The green anaconda, native to Brazil's Amazon and Pantanal wetlands, is the heaviest snake on Earth. The largest one ever recorded measured 27.7 feet long and weighed over 500 pounds, about as heavy as a baby grand piano, even though a different species, the reticulated python, still holds the record for longest snake. In 2024, scientists split the green anaconda into two distinct species after finding major genetic differences between northern and southern populations.
• The hyacinth macaw is the largest flying parrot species in the world, measuring about a meter, just over three feet, from beak to tail. Its bite can exert more than 300 pounds of pressure per square inch, strong enough to crack the rock-hard nuts of Brazil's acuri palm that almost no other animal can open. There's a catch: acuri nuts are often too tough even for the macaws to eat fresh off the tree, so in the Pantanal they wait for cattle to eat and digest the nuts first, then pick the softened seeds back out of the cow dung.
• Brazil is the only country in South America where Portuguese, not Spanish, is the official language, a legacy of a 1494 treaty in which the Pope divided the newly explored Americas between Spain and Portugal along a single line of longitude. Everything east of that line, including the Brazilian coast, went to Portugal, while everything west went to Spain, leaving Brazilians surrounded by Spanish-speaking neighbors on every side. With more than 209 million speakers, Brazil is now home to the largest Portuguese-speaking population on Earth by a wide margin.
• Iguazu Falls, straddling the border between Brazil and Argentina, is nearly three times wider than Niagara Falls, a 1.7-mile-long curtain made up of about 275 separate waterfalls rather than a single drop. At its tallest point it also plunges about 82 meters, roughly 20 meters higher than Niagara. Most of the falls sit on the Argentine side, but Brazil's smaller share offers the wide panoramic view that made Iguazu famous in photographs.
• Brazil is home to more Roman Catholics than any other country on Earth, about 100.2 million people according to the 2022 census. That Catholic share of the population has been shrinking fast though, falling from 65.1% in the 2010 census to 56.7% in 2022, as evangelical Christianity spreads quickly across the country. Even with that decline, Brazil's raw numbers are still large enough to keep it the world's biggest Catholic nation.
• Samba traces back to Bahia, in Brazil's northeast, where enslaved Africans blended religious and musical traditions from Angola and the Congo with local influences into genres like samba de roda. When descendants of those communities migrated to Rio de Janeiro in the early 1900s, they carried the music into the city's neighborhoods, and it evolved into the samba now heard at Carnival. The first official samba school opened in Rio in 1928, turning the music into the organized, competitive parades that still headline Carnival today.
• The Pantanal, spread mostly across western Brazil, is the largest tropical wetland on Earth, covering an estimated 54,000 to 81,000 square miles depending on the season, since the region floods and shrinks with the rains each year. About 80% of it sits inside Brazilian territory, and despite covering a fraction of the area the Amazon does, it packs in more than 4,700 recorded plant and animal species.
• Rio de Janeiro hosted the 2016 Summer Olympics, the first time the Games had ever been held anywhere in South America since the modern Olympics began in 1896. More than 11,000 athletes from a record 205 national teams competed, and the Games also saw the debut of the Refugee Olympic Team, ten athletes who competed under the Olympic flag because they had no national team of their own.

• The jaguar is the largest cat in the Americas and the third largest in the world after tigers and lions. It has the strongest bite relative to body size of any big cat, and unlike most cats, jaguars are powerful swimmers that hunt directly in the water, preying on fish and caimans. Brazil's Pantanal wetland holds the highest density of wild jaguars found anywhere on the continent, where individuals often grow as large as an African lioness thanks to the easy hunting.
• Capoeira began among enslaved Africans in Brazil, who disguised a real fighting technique as music and dance so their captors wouldn't recognize it as a martial art. Brazil banned capoeira outright in 1890, two years after slavery itself was abolished in the country, and practitioners faced arrest for decades afterward. It wasn't until 1937, after a demonstration for Bahia's state governor, that Mestre Bimba's capoeira school won official recognition, finally lifting the art form out of its underground status.
• Fernando de Noronha is a cluster of 21 volcanic islands about 220 miles off Brazil's northeastern coast, named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2001 for its exceptional marine life. To protect that fragile ecosystem, Brazil caps tourism at roughly 600 visitors a day across the entire archipelago and charges every visitor a daily environmental fee just to stay. The payoff is one of the largest colonies of tropical seabirds found anywhere in the Western Atlantic.
