• Russia is the largest country on Earth, covering about 17.1 million square kilometers, which is roughly 11% of the entire planet's land surface. It's so vast that it spans two continents and 11 time zones, so when people in Kaliningrad on the Baltic Sea are having breakfast, people in Kamchatka near Alaska are already sitting down for dinner.
• Siberia alone covers about 13.1 million square kilometers, making that single region of Russia larger than the entire contiguous United States, which measures roughly 9.8 million square kilometers. Despite all that land, only around 33 million people live there, fewer people than in the city of Tokyo alone.
• The Trans-Siberian Railway stretches 9,289 kilometers between Moscow and Vladivostok, making it the longest railway line in the world. A one-way trip crosses eight time zones and takes six to seven days, long enough to watch the scenery shift from European boulevards all the way to the Pacific coastline.

• Mount Elbrus, a dormant volcano in Russia's Caucasus Mountains, is the highest peak in Europe at 5,642 meters, taller than every mountain in the Alps, including Mont Blanc. Both of its summits are ancient volcanic domes that geologists say could technically erupt again.

• On February 15, 2013, a 20 meter wide asteroid exploded in the atmosphere over Chelyabinsk, Russia, releasing energy equivalent to about 30 Hiroshima bombs. The shockwave shattered windows across the city and injured more than 1,500 people, mostly from flying glass, making it the largest meteor event since the 1908 Tunguska explosion.
• Wrangel Island in the Russian Arctic has the highest density of polar bear dens on the planet, earning it the nickname 'polar bear maternity ward.' Up to 500 female bears give birth there most years, digging between 350 and 400 dens across the island's frozen slopes.
• The Mir diamond mine in Mirny, Siberia, plunges more than 525 meters deep with a diameter of 1,200 meters, and for decades Soviet aviation authorities banned helicopters from flying directly over it. • On October 4, 1957, the Soviet Union launched Sputnik 1, a satellite just 58 centimeters across, about the size of a beach ball, and weighing only 83.6 kilograms, becoming the first artificial object to orbit Earth. It circled the planet every 98 minutes for three months, and its simple radio beeps, picked up by ham radio operators worldwide, kicked off the space race and pushed the US to create NASA the following year.

A fire broke out while it still sat in its casting pit in 1737, and the cold water thrown on it to fight the flames cracked the still hot bronze, breaking off an 11 ton chunk that now sits on display right beside it.
• In 1703, Tsar Peter the Great founded St. Petersburg on marshy, flood-prone swampland at the mouth of the Neva River, determined to build Russia a 'window to Europe.' Construction was so brutal on the laborers forced to work the wetlands that the city earned a grim nickname over the centuries: 'the city built on bones.'
• The State Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, founded by Catherine the Great in 1764, now holds more than 3 million items, yet only about 60,000 of them, roughly 2%, are ever on public display at once. Walking past every single piece for just a few seconds each would take years to finish.
• St. Basil's Cathedral in Moscow is often said to have been built by an architect Ivan the Terrible blinded afterward so he could never design anything as beautiful again. • Leo Tolstoy's 'War and Peace' runs about 587,000 words across roughly 1,225 pages in its first published edition, following more than 500 characters through the Napoleonic Wars. Tolstoy reworked the entire novel by hand over and over before he was satisfied, at a length most publishers today would send straight back for cuts.
• In February 1869, Russian chemist Dmitri Mendeleev arranged all 63 known chemical elements into the first periodic table, an idea he said came to him in a dream where he saw the elements fall into place like a game of solitaire. The table was so accurate that it predicted the exact properties of three elements not yet discovered, gallium, scandium and germanium, all confirmed within the next two decades.
• Between 1885 and 1917, the House of Fabergé crafted around 50 jeweled Imperial Easter eggs for Russia's last two tsars, each one hiding a surprise inside, from miniature portraits to a tiny mechanical train. Only 43 of the original eggs are known to survive today, scattered across museums and private collections after the Bolshevik Revolution sent the Fabergé family into exile.
• The Bolshoi Ballet was founded in Moscow in 1776, making it one of the oldest ballet companies still performing anywhere in the world today.
