• The Colosseum could hold about 50,000 spectators when it opened in 80 CE, roughly 45,000 seated and another 5,000 standing in the upper tiers. That's close to the capacity of a modern NFL stadium, built from concrete and arches almost two thousand years before steel framing existed.
• Emperor Vespasian started building the Colosseum in 72 CE, and his son Titus opened it just eight years later with a hundred days of games. For the opening ceremony, workers flooded the entire arena floor so performers could stage full scale mock naval battles, a trick that became impossible once later emperors built a maze of underground tunnels beneath the floor.
